You don't have to drive all the way up to northern California to enjoy a tour of wine country. Baja, Mexico is known for its wine, and is home to some of the best vineyards in the world. Baja's top wine producing areas are all within 120 miles from the U.S. border, making it possible to escape for a weekend for a tour and taste of some of Baja's finest.
1. Research the regions you would like to visit. The three most well known regions are the Santo Tomas Valley, the San Vicente Valley, and the region known as the San Antonio de las Minas, which includes Calafia Valley and Guadalupe Valley. In these three regions, 90% of Mexican wine grapes are grown.
2. Pick the vineyards you wish to tour. There are so many Mexico wineries that you may at first feel overwhelmed. Start by finding out if there are any special wine tours or events going on at any of the wineries. For example, the Fiestas de la Vendimia, a 10 day annual wine festival, is held in the region each August. You may also want to take a trip to your favorite wine market, to sample some vintages from the region to narrow in on the vineyards to put on your not-to-miss list.
3. Make hotel reservations. If you will be touring wineries, you will most likely be drinking. Many of the wineries are located close to a city, such as Ensenada, where there are guest accommodations, or they offer their own. Make reservations ahead of time, especially if you are planning on visiting during a popular time or during a special event. Knowing that you do not have far to drive will make it easier to enjoy your tour tasting!
4. Buy a good road map. Whenever you are planning on driving around Mexico its a good idea to have a good road map. Sometimes roads are not well marked in Mexico and having a good road map can save you from driving miles out of your way. Mexico Road Logs and the Guia Roji are the best options; both can be ordered online. Always have a road map before you drive to Mexico, as for some reason they are not easy to find there.
5. Purchase Mexican auto insurance for your vehicle. You will need Mexican auto insurance for your car, even if you are just planning on staying the weekend. Luckily, you can purchase a policy for as many, or as few, days as you need it and quickly, online.
Visiting the wineries of Baja can be enjoyed year round. The dry, desert climate can make the days hot, but nights are always cool and inviting. You can stay in either the valley amongst the vineyards or in Ensenada along the coast. Either way, don't miss taking a tour of wine country on your next trip to the Baja. It could end up being your new favorite reason to visit Mexico!
