Cabo San Lucas is a major destination for international travelers. Its stunning beaches and gorgeous weather have been enchanting visitors for decades, but as the town grows in popularity and the number of visitors has been increasing. It has lost its allure as an off-the-beaten-path destination. If you crave the Cabo of twenty years ago, then the East Cape of Baja Sur is for you. Situated just one hour north Los Cabos, where the Pacific waters mix with the Sea of Cortes, the East Cape is a nature lovers dream, beckoning travelers with the promise of unparalleled scenery and exquisite isolation.
The coastline of East Cape is dominated by the Bahía Las Palmas, a bay known for its colorful coral reefs and its incredible fishing opportunities. The fishing is a major draw of East Cape, and the area is known as being a fish trap. Here, where the waters of the Pacific and Sea of Cortes mix, a variety of species can be found. In addition to traditional deep sea and pier fishing, fly-fishing can also be one there. The Bahía is a sheltered bay with a large outcropping of rock features, resulting in calm, sheltered shallow waters that attract an abundance of marine life. Marine species that you can fly fish for include redfish, snook, tarpon, bonefish, striped bass and yellow fin tuna.
Most visitors who travel to the East Cape are drawn to the areas of Bueno Vista and Los Barriles. Around these community centers several villages and homesteads have been developed, resulting in a rustic, outback community on the beach. Bueno Vista first came on the travelers scene when a local family built a hotel here, the Hotel Bueno Vista Beach Resort. Los Barriles grew up at the same time, as more and more travelers began to take notice of the attractive area.
If you want to travel to the East Cape of Baja Sur, you can do so by car. Roads service the entire area, though some can be a bit rough in places. There are many opportunities in the area to explore hidden beaches and dramatic sea cliffs. You can also go inland into the mountains, and explore the area's high deserts. Relax at a side resort or camp out in an RV park. Enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing during the day and relax with a refreshing beverage at night as you watch the sun set. The East Cape is for those travelers who want to really get away from it all.
The East Cape makes a great road trip destination for North American travelers. It is safe, friendly, and serviced by toll roads all the way from the border to Cabo. Secondary roads, however, service some of the more rustic beaches so having 4-wheel drive can come in handy in some spots. You won't need to get a visa for your car either, since Baja is in the Free Zone. You will need Mexican car insurance or RV insurance if you choose that method of travel. So come to East Cape and stay for as long as you like.
