December is a popular month to visit Mexico. It is a month of holidays, for one, but it is also a beautiful month, when the rains have ended and the sun is shining. Flowers are in bloom throughout the country, making for a picturesque road trip no matter where you are headed. Here is a sampling of some of the events that you can attend during a December road trip through Mexico.

73rd Annual National Silver Fair, "Feria Nacional de Plata" in Taxco, Guerrero November 27 to December 4, 2010 If you love silver, you won't want to miss this incredible exhibition of some of Mexico's finest silversmiths and artisans. Events include workshops, demonstrations and talks, as well as concerts and entertainment. The festival is located in the town of Taxco in the north part of the state of Guerrero. 7th Annual Vallarta Film Festival December 2 to December 6 Combine your love of film with your love of the beach with a weekend in Puerto Vallarta at the 7th Annual Vallarta Film Festival. Check out their website for details on show times, accommodations and other showings.

Feria Yucatan in Xmatkuil November 12 to December 5 This annual event is being held this year in Xmatkuil, Yucatan right outside of Merida. It will feature a Chinese Circus, an exhibit of animatronix dinosaurs and dolphin and sea lion exhibit. Events are held nightly for the duration of the festival, check their website for details.

Distant Shores: Art from Around the Globe - Soho Galleries, Merida, Yucatan November 12 to December 12, 2010 Merida, in the state of Yucatan, is famous for being an international city. Art galleries abound, as do museums and find dining restaurants. One event you won't want to miss is the Distant Shores exhibition at the Soho Gallery, featuring artists from Cuba, Portugal, the US, Spain and France as well as local Mexican artists.

Mexico City December 4, 2010 to January 8, 2011 The cultural center of Mexico lies in its capital, known as D.F., or Districto Federal, by locals. Here in the town's center, the Zocolo, lies the Worlds Largest Christmas Tree, as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The tree stands 110.35 meters high, has a diameter of 35 meters and weighs a whopping 330 tons! Activities are available day and night, and include ice-skating and music. Be sure and stop by the Fusion Art and Design Christmas Bazaar in Mexico Park to stock up on shoes, clothes, jewelry, art, bags and other handmade accessories from local artisans.

Record Race Ready 250, Ensenada Mexico December 10 to December 12, 2010 This is the last RECORD Off-Road race of the year and this event will feature cars, trucks, ATV's and motorcycles in an international off-road event. Check the website for information and to register.

Celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe December 12, 2010 The official day to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, is December 12. Everywhere in Mexico, celebrations begin on December 11 and go throughout the day on December 12. Events vary from town to town, but no matter where you are in Mexico, you can visit the local Catholic Church to attend a special mass for the Virgin.

Posadas de Navidad, Nationwide December 16 to December 24 Each year, the nine days before Christmas are celebrated with nightly re-enactments of Mary and Josephs search for an inn to stay in during their trip to Bethlehem. Each town has its own series of events, which include parades, piñata's for the kids, and general merry-making.

Noche Buena and Navidad, Nationwide Christmas Eve and Christmas day are celebrated throughout Mexico with singing, parading and feasting. Gifts are traditionally exchanged on Christmas Eve in Mexico. Wherever you are in Mexico, you can attend a special midnight mass at a local church to experience a true Mexican Christmas celebration.

Remember that since December is a popular month for tourism in Mexico, for both North Americans and local Mexicans, it is best to arrange a hotel before you arrive, especially if you will be arriving during the week before Christmas. Before you leave the U.S. or Canada, you will need to get Mexican auto insurance for your car, which you can get online or at the U.S./Mexico border. No matter where you go, you will encounter lots of festivities and happy people, because Navidad is everyone's favorite time of the year in Mexico. As they say in Mexico, Feliz Navidad!
