When most people think Baja, they think of Ensenada, La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. Yet, Baja is full of wonderful hidden gems, perfect for the visitor who wants a quiet, more traditional Mexican vacation in a town that still offers all the amenities tourists are used to.

San Felipe is a sleepy Baja town located on Baja's east coast, on the shores of the calm, warm waters of the Sea of Cortes. This beautiful desert oasis features stunning scenery, beautiful hotels, wonderful restaurants and a ton of activities for both young and old. If you haven't yet, you may want to consider discovering San Felipe for your next Mexican vacation.

San Felipe has recently gained recognition as being a major destination for North American retirees. Condos have been appearing up and down the coastline from San Felipe and American's have been snatching them up as fast as they are building them. This means great things for the local economy, and new stores and restaurants are being built in town. Part of the draw of San Felipe is its climate. It enjoys a hot, dry desert climate in the winter and a hot, humid Florida-like climate in the summer. Additionally, its location just 125 miles south of Calexico, California which makes it far enough to be "away from it all", but close enough to get to quickly.

There is a lot to do in San Felipe besides working on a tan. Anglers will find plenty to keep them busy in the warm waters off the coast, which are full of fish including tuna, barracuda, bass, snook and yellowfin. Trips out to the desert will allow you to encounter cacti filled valleys, desert springs and even waterfalls. You can explore both inland and offshore waters in a kayak or pedal boat. Mountain biking and dirt biking are also popular, and you can rent them in town to explore the desert and beyond. Scuba diving, jet skiing and parasailing are also available for the daring tourist, and are enjoyable year round in San Felipe.

San Felipe's popularity is growing faster than the locals can build hotel rooms to accommodate them. While there are many places to stay in San Felipe, including hotels, motels, RV parks, bed and breakfasts and furnished apartments, it is wise to consider making a reservation before heading down, especially if you will be traveling over the more popular holidays such as Christmas and Easter.

San Felipe, Mexico is a great Mexican vacation destination because it is a short drive from the U.S. and is accessible by roads that are in very good shape. If you drive to San Felipe, you will not need a permit for your vehicle since it is in the Mexican Free Zone. You will, however, still need to purchase Mexican car insurance. You can find a number of excellent and well-priced Mexican car insurance policies online that will protect you, your possessions and your car for the duration of your time in San Felipe.
