Just 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of San Luis, Arizona is the quiet coastal fishing village of El Golfo de Santa Clara. This picturesque beach town, in the Mexican state of Sonora, is a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of some of Mexico's more popular beach towns, and offers the visitor a quiet and peaceful vacation amid sun-kissed beaches, swaying palms--right next to the calm, warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. If you need a quick escape from the daily grind, you can plan a road trip to El Golfo, as it is lovingly known by the locals, and be sitting on the beach, sipping a fruity beverage within a day. If that's not enough of a reason to visit El Golfo, here are some more to get you thinking.
El Golfo sits on the edge of the Biosphere Reserve of the Upper California Gulf and the Colorado River Delta. This is where the rivers of the American southwest meet the Sea of Cortez, and it is home to an abundance of wildlife and plant life. With habitats incorporating fresh water zones, marshes and marine zones, the area is used largely by migrating birds as a winter sanctuary. There are over 80 species of birds, both land and marine, that can be spotted here throughout the year. Visitors can often see fishing eagles, brown and white pelicans, seagulls, sea quails and many species of ducks and geese.
The biosphere's unique location locked between ocean and desert makes it home to an abundance of desert animals as well. Reptiles such as the Desert Iguana, chameleons and a host of lizard and snake species can be seen here. Lucky visitors to the area may even get to see some of the most elusive mammals that call the biosphere home, including Mexican bobcats, jaguars, Mexican gray wolves and ocelots. The plant life here is just as abundant, and in fact 75% if the total types of plants in Mexico can be found in this reserve, making it one of the most diverse regions in all of Mexico.
Visitors to El Golfo will find a variety of accommodations to suit their needs and budgets. Those traveling by RV can stay at the charming El Golfo RV Park, a fully equipped RV park and resort hotel that is right on the beach. More adventurous travelers can even camp out on the beach at the El Golfo RV Park. For those seeking something a little more plush, there are many hotels to choose from, including the Hotel Kasol, the Villa Del Sol, the Hotel Duenas and the Hotel San Antonio.
A road trip to El Golfo couldn't be simpler due to the brand new toll road that now connects the U.S. to El Golfo, which is appropriately named the Coastal Highway El Golfo de Santa Clara. Passing the border in your vehicle won't require a Mexican permit since El Golfo is in the Mexican 'free zone.' You will need to get Mexican auto insurance for your vehicle, however. The simplest way is to buy it online before you go and have a printed out copy of your policy to show the officials at the border as you cross. If you are ready to experience a peaceful and beautiful vacation by the beach, plan a trip to the serene and pristine El Golfo de Santa Clara.
