After the monsoon rains, in October, local markets throughout Mexico begin to fill with all sorts of exotic seasonal fruits. Shopping in local markets can be a thrilling experience, as you will come face to face with some of the freshest and tastiest fruits and vegetables you have ever seen for incredibly low prices. Touring a local market will allow you to sample some of Mexico's sweetest natural offerings.
Black Zapote (Zapote Negro): The black zapote looks very similar to a small, round avocado. It has a leathery black skin and when ripe, the fruit feels squishy. The skin is taken off and discarded. The fruit is dark black and has the consistency of pudding. It is thick and rich and sweet. You can eat it raw or mix it with fruit juice in a blender for a tasty liquado. Some prefer it spread on toast like jam.
Dragon Fruit (Pitahaya): It is hard not to notice the showy dragon fruit. It's hot pink, thick and leathery skin is made of leaves that are green at the tips. Inside, the fruit is either white or hot pink with thousands of tiny seeds. The sweet fruit is taken out of the skin and eaten either raw or blended into a drink. The seeds are edible but the skin is not. Dragon fruit is the fruit of the Hylocereus cactus and is native to central and South America.
Jocote (Jocote): Jocote's are small oval shaped fruits that ripen from green to an orange, yellow or red color. The local's eat them green with salt and lime juice as well as when they are ripe. The ripe jocote's have a sweet flavor. Each fruit contains a single large seed. The skin of the jocote is edible.
Nance (Nanci): The small yellow fruit from the Brysonima crassifolia tree is known as nance. Nance's have a single seed that is not edible but the skin is. Nance's have a sweet flavor and a distinct aroma. They are often candied by boiling in sugar water and eaten as a dessert. A liquor called licor de nanche is prepared locally in Mexico from the nance.
Passion Fruit (Maracuya): Certain species of the passion flower vine produce an edible fruit that is called maracuya in Spanish. The fruits are yellow or green, about 5-inches long, have an oval shape and thick skin. When cut open they reveal an inside is full of sweet pulp and seeds. The pulp and seeds are edible and are often put into a blender to make a sweet drink.
Rambutan (Rambutan): Rambutan's look like a spiny strawberry. A close relative of the lychee, when cut open they reveal a sweet white fruit with a single seed. It is found ripe two times during the year in Mexico, in the fall and in the spring. Rambutan's have a flavor and texture similar to a grape.
October through March is a great time to explore Mexico by road because it is the dry season. Days are crisp and sunny and nights are cool. Take advantage of the great weather and pack up your car and head south for a road trip to explore the local markets of Mexico. Before you leave, don't forget to get your Mexican auto insurance online! And don't forget your camera, either. Taking pictures of unknown fruits and veggies can come in handy later when you want to identify that lovely fruit you enjoyed but just can't remember the name. Local markets can introduce you to a banquet of exotic flavors that may just keep bringing you back down south for more.
