Legends abound in Baja California about lost treasure. Off the coast on both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortes lie sunken Spanish ships, with holds reputed to be full of Spanish gold. In the desert, it is said, lay hidden secret holds of gold, silver and jewels, carefully hidden in the past and never recovered to this day. If you dream of being a real life Indiana Jones, a carefully planned road trip to Baja California could give you the ability to make your dream come true.
Several books have been written on the subject of the lost treasures of Baja. Baja California: Vanished Missions, Lost Treasures, Strange Stories Tall and True was written by Choral Pepper in 1973, and gives information on many of the legends of Baja. Included is information on the famous Lost Mission of Santa Isabel. Choral searched for the legendary mission in 1966 and included its legend, and the discoveries made by her search party, in the book. However, despite the many searches that have been made for the lost mission and its treasures in the ensuing years, none have ever revealed the exact site of the mission. Its treasure, if it exists, still lies hidden beneath the desert sands.
If you are interested in planning your own treasure-hunting mission to Baja California, you need to start with a little research. The works of Choral Pepper are a good start, as she dedicated her life to exploring the deserts of Baja and left behind many records on legends and purported locations of treasure. You can also spend some time on Google Earth, looking at satellite images of Baja's backcountry for odd shaped formations, indicators of human activity.
Some areas will be accessible by road, some by 4X4 (a necessity for navigating many of Baja's desert tracks), and some will only be accessible by foot or helicopter. Map the areas you wish to cover and decide on supplies you will need for the road. Treasure hunting in Baja will take you into many extreme conditions, where you may or may not find food and water. Plan accordingly, bring a GPS, lots of back-up fuel, food and water and your sense of adventure, you will need it!
