In recent years Mexico roads have come a long way in terms of directness and quality, thanks mainly to an intensive toll road highway-building program throughout the country. Services, however, have been slow to follow. Many of the things we take for granted as being a part of a road trip are just not to be found on a road trip through Mexico. One needs to plan accordingly.

Hotels

Roadside traveler hotels are basically non-existent throughout most of Mexico. Hotels are relegated to the main tourist towns, which can be few and far between depending on the part of Mexico you are traveling through. The hotels you will encounter rent by the hour, and most people choose to avoid these hotels. Invest in a good guidebook that will give you details on where lodging is possible. Plan your trip so you arrive at your hotel destination before nightfall, since driving at night in Mexico is not recommended.

Gas Stations

Even on toll roads gas stations can be few and far between. If you have the most current Guia Roji road map it will tell you where gas stations are located, but in Mexico things can change in a heartbeat. To be on the safe side, fill up with gas whenever you have the chance. Running out of gas in the middle of Mexico is no bueno.

Roadside Calling

Roadside emergency call boxes are non-existent in Mexico. Have your cell phone unlocked and equip it with a new SIM card from a Mexico cellular service provider as soon as you cross the border. You can use your cell phone to call for help in the case of an emergency or breakdown. If you are on one of Mexico's toll roads, you can get service from the Green Angels. Green Angels provide emergency roadside assistance to drivers on toll roads for free. While they do regularly patrol the toll roads, you can also call them for help. Their phone number is on the receipt you receive when you pay the toll at the entrance to the toll road.

Rest Stations

Don't expect to come across any public rest stations on the side of the road. You will be lucky if you can find a place to pull over, since many roads do not even have curbs. You can find restaurants intermittently so take advantage and stop when you find a nice place. Don't make the mistake of thinking you will "stop at the next place" since that place may be hundreds of miles down the road.

Investing in the newest edition of a good Mexico travel guide and road map will prove to be invaluable on a road trip through Mexico. Along with good Mexican auto insurance and travel insurance, a good travel guide can make your road trip go a whole lot smoother. Knowing what not to expect on a road trip can be as valuable as knowing what to expect. However, in Mexico, always expect the unexpected! It's what makes a road trip here adventurous, exciting and a whole lot of fun!
