A road trip to Mexico can be the adventure of a lifetime. However, being properly prepared can help to reduce the time spent dealing with some of the more annoying road trip situations that can come up.

1. Have your car tuned up before you leave. Before you leave on your road trip to Mexico, have your vehicle tuned up by your mechanic. Have the oil changed, as well as any other preventative maintenance things that need to be done. If your tires are looking bare, splurge on a new set. Having your car in tip-top mechanical condition will help to prevent any mishaps along the road.

2. Buy extra parts to have on hand. In Mexico, the most common cars are Toyotas and Volkswagens. If your car is not one of these makes, you may find parts hard to come by, at least in the smaller villages and towns. While parts can always be ordered, something as simple as a fuel filter change could end up taking days. If you have your own parts, it will guarantee a quicker fix. While you can't possibly have every extra part on hand, having some of the most common ones, or ones you think your car may need, is a smart idea.

3. Get Mexican auto insurance online before you go. You will need Mexican auto insurance to drive your vehicle legally in Mexico. While you can get it at the border, it is better to get it online before you go. This way you can shop for the best coverage for the best price, as well as guarantee you are dealing with a reputable company. If you end up needing to use your Mexican auto insurance, you want to make sure it actually works!

4. Splurge on roadside assistance coverage. Some Mexican auto insurance companies offer a roadside assistance coverage program in Mexico. It may cost a few extra bucks, but can come in handy if you find yourself with a flat, lost, or in general need of assistance.

5. Don't forget a Mexico road map. A massive road building campaign has been underway in Mexico over the past 5 years. And the results are great. However, there are still some roads that are not well marked and it can be easy to get turned around. Get a good road map of Mexico before you leave. They are not easy to come by in Mexico, so don't plan on buying one there or you may find yourself sorely disappointed.

6. Get your cell phone ready for service in Mexico before you leave. Calling for roadside assistance is great, but not if your cell phone isn't working in Mexico. It's easy to get your cell phone ready for service in Mexico. Just call your phone service provider before you leave and ask them to unlock it. Once you are in Mexico, head to any cell phone service provider store, such as TelCel or Movistar, and get a SIM card. Charge up your card and talk until your minutes are used up.

Following these tips won't guarantee a trouble-free road trip to Mexico, but they will make things a bit easier. So start getting ready for a wonderful trip to Mexico.
