Driving down Baja from tip to bottom is a great road trip, allowing you to see an incredible diversity of landscapes and wildlife. You can make it even more exciting by ferrying across the Sea of Cortes. You can decide later about whether or not you want to drive back up the other side, via Sonora, or head further down for more adventures! Take some time to plan out your crossing and make sure you have all your necessary paperwork before you arrive.
Santa Roslia to Guaymas
The small port town of Santa Rosalia offers ferry services to Guaymas, Sonora every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The town of Santa Roslia is located just a little more than halfway down the Baja peninsula on the Sea of Cortes. It departs from a terminal on the east side of the trans-peninsular highway, near to the bus station, at 9AM. The trip takes approximately 7 to 9 hours. If you are crossing in a car, you will need to contact them at least 2 days in advance to make reservations.
La Paz to Topolobampo
If you ferry from La Paz you will have two options as to where to land. The first is Topolobampo, in the small state of Sinaloa. It is located just across the border from Sonora. The ferry leaves every Monday through Friday at 3 PM and Saturday at 11 PM. The trip only takes about 6 hours. Call the offices in La Paz to make reservations and to find out current fees. 01 (800) 122-1414
La Paz to Mazatlan
Mazatlan is located at the very south end of the state of Sinaloa. The ferry leaves La Paz on Sunday at 5 PM and Tuesday and Thursday at 8 PM. It takes about 18 hours to make the trip. Tickets can be purchased for either cabin or tourist class rooms, or you can purchase a ticket without a room, a salon ticket, but these sell out fast. Restaurants and other services are located on the ship. Call the La Paz terminal to find out current fees and for reservations.
Paperwork
Oh yes, don't forget your paperwork! Travelers to Baja often forget that once they cross over into another state, their cars need to be properly permitted. You should already have your Mexican auto insurance. You will need it to get a six-month travel permit for your vehicle. You will also need proof of ownership (a title will be fine) or some other form of vehicle registration in your name. A cash deposit or credit card deposit is also required for permits to be issued. Be sure that you get your vehicle permit before moving on through Mexico, because if you are caught without out it, not only will you probably be fined, but you will have to go all the way back to the port to get it, as they are only issued at international crossings!
Crossing the Sea of Cortes by ferry is a great way to expand your trip to the Baja to include the mainland. Just make sure to plan ahead and have your paperwork in order, and you will be set to travel Mexico not just by land but also by sea!
