Sonora is Baja's friendly neighbor to the east, a beautiful state with much to entice the visitor. It is often over looked by spring breakers who have their sites set on Baja. Despite this, Sonora has been growing in popularity as a spring break destination because of its beautiful beaches, local charm and affordable prices. If you want to spend your spring break on the beach, but don't want to deal with the crowds in Baja, then give Sonora a try. Here are just some of the many reasons why Sonora, Mexico makes a great spring break destination.

Great deals: Take advantage of the great specials being offered due to the slow tourism that Sonoran towns are experiencing due to the economy. If you are on a budget but want to get the most out of what you got, check out the great deals being offered in towns such as Rocky Point. Rocky point is just 60 miles from the Arizona border and always offers tourists a good time.

Sea of Cortes: While most of the spring break destinations in Baja are on the wave pumping Pacific Coast, Sonoran destinations are on the shores of the calm, warm waters of the Sea of Cortes. This gentle body of water is great for swimming, fishing, snorkeling and diving. The premier beach towns in Sonora are Rocky Point, a.k.a. Puerto Peñasco, and San Carlos.

No hassle driving: You can quickly and easily drive to your spring break destination when you do it in Sonora. Rocky point is just 95 miles from Ajo, Arizona and San Carlos is about 200 miles further south. Both towns can be reached via toll road, so the road trip is easy and no nonsense. If you want a quick trip, Rocky Point is the way to go. If you are willing to drive a little further, though, San Carlos is worth it. Lots of great restaurants, hotels and even golf courses await the tourist on land and ocean full of deep-sea fish awaits the fishermen just a few miles offshore. No car permit is required for Rocky Point, but if you venture further south to San Carlos, you will need a Mexican permit for your car. For either destination, however, you will need Mexican auto insurance.

The two most popular destinations for spring break in Sonora are San Carlos and Puerto Peñasco. In Puerto Peñasco, some of the most popular bars are. JJ's Cantina, Manny's Beach Club and Club Elixer. In San Carlos, you won't want to miss Banana's, Froggy's and the Marina Cantina. This is where the party will be starting at the end of February and ending in April after Easter. There are lots of tour agencies that offer all-inclusive packages in both Puerto Peñasco and San Carlos so no matter which you choose, fun will be sure to follow.

To drive to Sonora, you will need to get Mexican auto insurance for your vehicle before you cross the border. If you are traveling with a group, ask your online Mexico insurer about special group rates for Mexican auto insurance. Driving to Mexico for spring break will save you money on airfare and it's a whole lot more fun. And fun is what spring break is all about.
