If your idea of a great summer is chasing waves, then set your sights on a trip down to Baja. With over 2,000 miles of coastline, you could spend a lifetime exploring its many varied and beautiful beaches. The best way to spend a surf trip in Baja is camping out on the beach. All you need is a vehicle with a surf rack and a good sense of adventure and depending on how much time you have, you can hit one or all of these Baja surf camp destinations.

Alisitos K-58 Surf Camp

Located on the beach between Tijuana and Ensenada, just northwest of La Mision off of the toll road sits the always popular Alisitos K-58 Surf Camp. It tempts surfers year-round with its killer beach break and convenient location. Alisitos offers both RV sites and regular campgrounds. Showers and restrooms are available on-site. The Board Shop offers surf lessons and also sells and rents surfboards. Hotels, restaurants and bars are located nearby.

Playa Salsipuedes

Playa Salsipuedes was once one of Ensenada's best kept surf secrets, but the word has gotten out recently and you can generally find a crew of surfers there, especially when the tide is low. This heavy right point break isn't for newbies, but even beginners can appreciate the extreme beauty of the Salsipuedes beach. Public camping there costs between $5 and $10 at various campsites. RV sites are available but services are limited. Only small RV's are recommended due to road conditions there.

Coyote Cal's

Located just south of Ensenda on the Pacific coast, Coyote Cal's is a popular hostel destination for surfers, backpackers and other international travelers. Its budget friendly campground prices and stunning seaside location make Coyote Cal's a must-stop for all Baja surfing road trips. Besides the great surf and the friendly faces, you can also enjoy scenic hiking trails, miles of mountain bike trails and a vibrant social scene.

Villa de San Miguel Just north of Ensenada near the small town of San Miguel is the popular surf camp Villa de San Miguel. It is located on a plateau overlooking the rocky beach and offers great views of the surf. While most come there to test their skills on the famous Punta San Miguel surf break, you can also enjoy other activities such as hiking and mountain biking. Full service RV sites are available along with campsites. A lively bar and restaurant are located nearby.

You don't need any special paperwork to drive your car or RV into Baja but you will need Mexican car insurance. Policies can be purchased for just a weekend or for a year, depending on how long you plan your surf trip in Baja lasts. So if you are feeling the urge to spend an endless summer surfing the many breaks in Baja, pack up some board shorts and throw your boards in the truck. If your destination is northern Baja, you could be relaxing at one of these scenic campgrounds by nightfall.
