Traveling to Mexico with kids is no harder than traveling solo. Kids will enjoy the laid back vibe of Mexico, especially since kids of all ages are so welcomed there. Mexicans are very family oriented and love to encounter family travelers. There is plenty for kids to do whether you are in the mountains or on the beach. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your family vacation to Mexico.

1. Children need passports to travel. All children who travel to Mexico will need to have a valid U.S. passport. You can easily get one by taking your child, along with a birth certificate and parent identification information, to the post office. You will need to bring some passport photos of your child to turn in with the passport application you fill out at the Post Office. Expect to wait at least 6 weeks for the passports to arrive.

2. Single parent travelers have special requirements. If you are a single parent traveling with a child to Mexico, you should expect to be asked for written permission from the other parent to take the child into Mexico. Have a notarized letter from the child's other parent giving you permission to travel internationally with the child to avoid lengthy waits at the border.

3. Take precautions to help keep the family healthy. While no special medication or vaccinations are required for kids to travel to Mexico, it is important to do some research and know what kinds of illnesses you may encounter on your trip. Small children, and even adults, can encounter traveler's diarrhea in Mexico from unclean water. Make sure to drink only purified water and bring along your favorite remedy to have on-hand in case illness strikes. While there are many pharmacies in Mexico, they may not carry the type of medicine you are familiar with, so bringing your own can help to prevent confusion.

4. Research family friendly destinations. While all destinations in Mexico are family friendly, some are more interesting for children than others. Spend some time researching destinations in Mexico and find out destinations that other families have visited and enjoyed. Also take into consideration your children and the types of activities that they enjoy. If your kids are happy and entertained, you are all more likely to enjoy your vacation!

5. Mexico has many hotels that offer nanny services. If your kids are young and you would like to be able to enjoy some adult time on your vacation, you may want to look into hotels that offer nanny services. There are many all-inclusive resorts, like the Dreams Resorts, that include nanny services in the price of the hotel room. Carefully selected and trained staff watches kids on-site, allowing your kids to have a great time while the adults are off having fun too.

If you are planning a road trip, you will need to have Mexican auto insurance for your vehicle. Consider adding on additional travel insurance to your policy to cover you in case of the unexpected. An accident is bad enough without kids, but with kids, you want to be able to solve your issue as soon as possible. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind. A family road trip to Mexico is a great way to introduce your kids to the rich culture in Mexico. With a little planning, you can make your next family vacation one that your family will treasure for years to come.
