I remember when the swine flu broke out in Mexico City. I was living in Guatemala at the time, and had a vacation planned for the Chiapas beach town of Puerto Arista. My neighbors and friends warned me not to visit Mexico, lest my family and I would contract the deadly disease. They were sure that death awaited us across that infamous border. I was sure it was all hype. And besides, we weren't planning on going to the Distrito Federal, or Mexico City as we call it, where the majority of reports of the illness had originated. I had many reasons not to believe the hype, or the fear propaganda campaign, that was being waged by sensationalist news agencies. I was right and we had a fabulous vacation on a deserted beach without a single sick person in sight.

Having lived in Central America, I have lived through much hype. I have survived Hurricane Emily in Tulum (direct hit at Akumal, 14 kilometers down the beach, we stayed on the beach in Tulum and were fine). I lived through the disastrous hurricane Stan in Lake Atitlan in Guatemala (direct hit, we were fine, just without electricity for 5 days). I am sure I have given my family sleepless nights, worrying about their daughter down in the wilds of Central America. I understand their worry, because I have seen the sensationalist media shows that try to convince Americans how dangerous it is down here. Not to say that nothing bad ever happens. However, having grown up in Austin, Texas and San Diego, California, I can honestly say that I have seen less violence and crime "down here" than "up there".

When tourists come to Mexico, or any other Central American country, they are not headed to the area's where violence occurs. I'm not sure how many people think that Juarez or Tijuana are ideal vacation destinations. Places like Tulum, Cabo San Lucas, Rocky Point, and even Cancun are very safe, especially for tourists. It is not in the best interest of business to have bad things happen to tourists, and the Mexican government takes great pains to ensure the safety of its greatest asset, tourism. In addition, the Mexican people who live in these towns make all their money off of tourism, and they go to great lengths to make visitors feel warm and welcome.

That being said, unfortunately there is still a great fear among norte americano's concerning visiting Mexico. The fear propaganda campaign, which sells ads and airspace, has been generally effective. Tourism is down. Prices have dropped. This is bad news for the Mexican people, who rely on tourism for their livelihood. However, this is great news for me! No long lines, low food prices, great shopping, I couldn't be happier! Living in Mexico right now really couldn't be better. (Here's a little insider tip: if you have been considering buying property in Mexico, now is the time. Land prices and real estate prices are ridiculously low due to the economic lull.)

I'm sure that in time people will begin to realize that the fear hype is just hype. I'm sure the beaches will be crowded once again, and prices will go back up. Until then, I am taking full advantage of the lull in tourism. I would recommend travel to Mexico right now to anyone. Hey, I'm down here with two young kids, and I couldn't feel any safer or happier. It's always good to take precautions, and understand the dangers that exist wherever you go. However, the dangers in Mexico have been generally blown out of proportion. This is bad news for the Mexican economy, but good news for those looking for a great vacation at a rock bottom prices.
