The design of the guitar with its Gothic looking horns and flat top is not to everyone's liking, and this was certainly the case with a certain Mr Les Paul. Having said that, the Gibson SG became very popular in many styles of music due to its biting, no-nonsense sound. Below are 10 interesting points about the Gibson SG: 1. The guitar was introduced by Gibson in 1961 and has continued to be manufactured ever since. 2. The guitar evolved as a result of the reduction in the sales of the Les Paul model. The Les Paul design was given an all mahogany body with the flat top and also the distinctive double cutaway. This new Les Paul was eventually renamed the SG model as a result of Les Paul himself not liking the new look of the guitar carrying his name. 3. The SG generally features an all mahogany body and neck. The neck is a more shallow design than that of a Les Paul standard. 4. The guitar also featured two humbucker guitar pickups and a Tune-o-matic bridge set up, although some special models would have featured a tremolo system. 5. A larger 'bat winged' style pick guard was introduced in 1967 to replace the original smaller version. 6. The SG gained a reputation for being neck heavy as a result of its thin mahogany body, which was considerably lighter than that of a Les Paul guitar. 7. Famous SG players include: Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix's cream three pickup SG currently resides in Orlando's Hard Rock Cafe. 8. The scale of a mahogany neck is 24.75" and joins the body at the 19th fret. The double cutaway allowed easier access to the high notes. 9. Black Sabbath's Toni Iommi endorses this style of guitar and the models that bear his signature have religious crosses inlaid into the guitar's instead of the usual block inlays. 10. A double-neck version of this model of guitar was also produced by Gibson utilising six string and twelve string necks. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin famously played this double-neck version of the guitar when playing live at various stages throughout his illustrious career. So there it is, 10 interesting points about this legendary guitar. Not all guitars acquire legendary status but the Gibson SG model in my opinion surely does. It's been around the world of music for so many years and I'm sure will continue to appeal to guitarists of all playing styles for many many years to come.
