Baking cookies relieves stress, lifts our spirit, and helps us stay in touch with relatives and friends. Baking cookies is one way of saying "welcome home".

Cookies fill a lot of needs in a family. Like many simple things, baking cookies is more than it appears to be. And truthfully, there are a lot of ways to speak that language besides baking cookies. Cookies are baked by someone for someone to enjoy. Cookies on a plate with pretty napkins and a cup of cocoa offer a warm welcome when your husband gets home from work, or a neighbor drops by.

Cookies are one of the fastest and easiest things to make. Learn how to bake the perfect cookies and decorate them like a professional. Just like cookies, to make the perfect batch you have to follow a recipe and measure each ingredient.

Of course you can improvise a little bit, but each slight variation changes the outcome of the cookies and can take a great recipe and make it mediocre, or a decent recipe and make it great.

Cookies are categorized into five groups: shaped, refrigerated, pressed, rolled and dropped.

For example, shaped cookies are a little more fancy than other cookies and use a pastry bag or cookie press. Cookies decorated with cookie paint, colored sugar or sprinkles can also be stacked and stored easily.

Chocolate chip, oatmeal, snickerdoodles, peanut butter, cut-out sugar cookies, chocolate drops, peppernuts - it doesn't matter if they are made from a gourmet recipe or one taken from the side of a box, as long as they smell delicious and taste better than they smell.

Most kids like to help bake cookies. Some children's attention begins to wane once cookies are in the oven; this is a transparent attempt to get out of helping with the clean-up. Decorating cookies is an adventure in itself. And few children will complain if you insist on eating their cookie artwork.

Most people seem to think of budgeting as baking cookies without sugar or chocolate chips. A budget is no different, if you don't have money budgeted for areas like going to the movies, vacation, buying clothes, or even "blow money" then IT IS like baking cookies without chocolate chips or sugar. If you invent a cookie that doesn't have sugar or chocolate chips I am telling you budgets are not supposed to be a hassle.

An easy way to incorporate your ancestry into holiday festivities is to bake cookies from your countries of origin.

I can trace my interest in cooking and baking back to baking cookies with my family, particularly my mom, for the holidays.
