Most people aren't as healthy as they would like to be. Whether it's eating more vegetables or getting more exercise, the key to health may sound simple and straightforward, but it's far from easy. Stressful jobs, long commutes, and personal and professional obligations all stop us from making the choices we know are good for us. The solution, however, is simple: a wellness coach. Acting as a guide and personal mentor, a wellness coach can help you take control of your health and establish good habits that you can maintain long-term.
So why the need for a wellness coach? Because the realities of the modern world make doing what it takes to get healthy extremely difficult. Junk food is everywhere, there are conflicting and confusing claims about the new "miracle diet," many jobs require long sedentary hours in front of a computer, and few people have the time (or desire) to hop onto a treadmill at the end of a long day.
A wellness coach will help you address the unique obstacles in your life and find reasonable, sustainable ways to manage them. Don't have time to cook during your busy workweek? A wellness coach may suggest that you cook something on Sunday that you can eat a few nights in a row, supplemented by quick and healthy sandwiches that take just seconds to prepare. Do you find yourself binging on sweets when you're stressed and upset? A wellness coach can help you develop more constructive ways to cope with your emotions. Does the very idea of exercise fill you with dread? A wellness coach will encourage you to find an activity that you actually enjoy. Whether it's dancing samba, playing Frisbee, jumping on a trampoline, or walking your dog, exercise can and should be a liberating celebration of movement, not a form of punishment.
In addition, a wellness coach will not prescribe a strict diet regimen based on ideal caloric intake or carb-to-protein ratio. A wellness coach will instead emphasize eating whole unprocessed foods, staying active, and achieving balance in all areas of your life. Chances are if you're nourished by your relationships and your career, you'll find it less of a struggle to manage what you eat. In partnership with doctors, nurses, and dietitians, and other medical professionals, a wellness coach can help people break bad habits, regain control over their behavior, and make healthy lifestyle changes that last for the long run.
