Anyone who chooses to join a martial arts class, to become a trained and disciplined fighter, is going to need their own special karate uniform that they can wear throughout training and during sparring sessions. This unique looking outfit, known as the karategi, is almost as old as Karate itself and has been worn by students for hundreds of years now. Today the karategi is one of the best links modern fighters have with the masters of the past, making it as much a tradition as it is a necessity for training.
The karategi you see in martial arts classes these days are most commonly all white and sometimes come in solid black, and they are all made of lightweight cotton or blended materials. The materials used to construct one of these uniforms is supposed to be thick enough to absorb the fighter's sweat and protect them from bodily abrasions, but they also have to be thin enough to allow air to pass through freely and allow the fighter to move with less restriction.
If you have seen a karategi before, you are probably familiar with the traditional style they are available in, which consist of three individual pieces that are worn together to form a single outfit. The pants are a fairly typical pair of cotton slacks, with an elastic or drawstring waist and a very loose fit that provides a better range of motion. The jacket is also made to be very loose fitting for better movement and it closes in front by doubling over from one side of the torso to the other.
The most interesting part of this outfit is actually the belt, or Obi, which is tasked with holding the jacket closed, because that belt is as symbolic as it is functional, and then some. The belt comes in a large assortment of colors and can be marked with different colored stripes, to mark a fighter's rank, which can be very telling of their amount of skill and the kinds of techniques they are learning and already know. A student with a green belt is usually one that is just starting out and is in need of much learning, while a student with a black belt has been training for several years and is well on their way to becoming a master.
Many people sign up for a martial arts class and suit up in their own karategi without ever pondering its significance or anything else about it. The more you know about the karate uniform and what makes it important to the sport, you tend to appreciate it much more and feel even closer to the roots of the ancient art you are now learning to master.
