What is the point of recycling? What does it do for us? Why are we constantly being urged to do it?

In general terms, recycling is finding a new use for previously used materials in order to prevent waste and lower the need to consume additional raw goods. The idea is to also reduce energy usage, water pollution, air pollution, and thus lower greenhouse gas emissions. Thus apart from the direct benefits to an individual like lowering his or her costs and saving cash, there is the bigger benefit to civilization as a whole. In other words, if enough people are conscientious in regards to recycling, the impact on our world can be enormously powerful.

Almost all materials can be recycled somehow. This includes many types of glass, paper, electronics, metals, plastics and so forth. Although talking about what is recycling in the strictest definition means generating a fresh supply of the same material, the reality is a bit different. This is due to the costs in most cases would not be realistic in a vast majority of occasions. And so in real world practice recycling more often than not means reusing material for a slightly different purpose than that material was originally built for. For instance recycled office paper may be re-purposed to make cardboard.

An additional form of recycling is when valuable components are salvaged from used products. For example, lead being obtained from dead car batteries or copper from electrical wiring that's no longer in use.

Admittedly there is a limit to the number of times that something can be recycled. The best example to illustrate this is paper which can only be recycled a handful of times before extreme material corruption makes additional recycling impractical.

Recycling is not a new idea in our times. It has been practiced for a very long time but it was generally done when there was a crisis causing shortages. At other times it was done for some kind of economic advantage that would come from the economizing of resources through recycling.

In modern days the culture of recycling has gained steam. More so in recent times when it has become evident that there is a real threat of the human race running out of some key resources if care is not taken to preserve our current supply.

Facts about recycling make a fairly lengthy list. When recycling costs or efforts are compared against the benefits that are to be had, there is just no sound argument that more recycling policies should not be enacted. We live in a world with limits. Recycling provides us the chance to sustain our way of living without massive interruption. As awareness is increased over time, and new generations come into a world where recycling is just a way of existing, we find real hope that we can end the overconsumption of our precious resources.
