The hotel industry has seen a tremendous growth over the years. A lot of transformation has been observed in it over the years. Chefs are the main entity of the restaurant business. Thus with the changes in the industry a lot of changes have also been observed in them. These changes are with regards to their clothing.

Chef clothing is an important thing that needs to be laid emphasis on. The traditional clothing consisted of cloths made up of a single layer of cotton. They were white in color and were available in only a few sizes. However with time a lot of innovations have been made to the same.

The basic clothing of the chefs consists of a jacket, a hat or a torque and pants. These clothing is available in a very simple or a much elegant form. One can choose the type according to the budget. The ambience and type of hotel also play an important role in this selection. If the restaurant is a simple one much emphasis is not laid on the design and the style of the clothing. However in big hotels a lot of emphasis is laid on such things.

In cases when the customers can see the chefs cooking, being presentable is of a lot of importance. In places where the kitchen is not usually visible to the customers, a lot of emphasis need not be laid on the presentation. Along with being presentable, the most important function that the chefs' clothing is supposed to perform is protection. It should provide the chef optimum protection from heat.

Chefs jacket are one of the most essential piece of clothing required. They usually consist of ten to twelve knit buttons. This is because plastic buttons cannot sustain the heat in the kitchen and wear out easily. They also cannot withstand constant washing which is usually required. Many hotels usually have their logo embossed on the coat.

Apron or waistcoats are another form of clothing mostly used by chefs. They basically offer protection to their uniform against stains. As a result they become easy to wash and last for a long time. Scarfs and neckerchiefs are also used by a lot of chefs. They are basically used to absorb sweat. These clothing actually are termed as accessories used by the chefs.

The most important clothing of the chef is the hat or the torque. It basically came into existence to prevent hair from falling into the food while it is being prepared. In many cases, it represents the status of the chef. A chef with the huge hat is considered to be a senior. Also the pleats on the hat symbolize various things. Modern day chefs prefer a bandana over the traditional hats.

Irrespective of the type of hotel or restaurant for which the clothing is required, budget is the most important thing. One should prepare a budget prior to just going about buying any kind of clothing. It is essential to stick to the budget and buy accordingly.
