There has been much interest lately concerning the ability of hoodia as it pertains to being an appetite suppressant and its ability to help us control weight. Hoodia is a natural supplement that can help us achieve our goal of losing weight. With the increase in obesity in the developing world it is important that we strive to get ourselves in better shape as a society. In the United States alone more than 300,000 deaths are attributed to obesity each year. Obesity can lead to many other serious diseases such as diabetes and heart disease among others. There are three main components to losing weight and keeping it off. One must exercise on a regular basis, eat a healthy diet and consume the right supplements to aid us in this area. We also must be committed to our goals.

The Kalahari desert in southern Africa is the only place in the world that hoodia grows. The San Bushmen have been using this for thousands of years to control appetite and hunger. They would consume the plant when on hunting trips which will take them away from home for weeks at a time.

This attracted the interests of many scientists who wanted to identify the ingredient in hoodia that was responsible for this phenomenon. Most of these studies focused on an ingredient known as P57, which turns out to be the active ingredient in hoodia. They noticed that when they injected animals with P57 the results were a dramatic decrease in food intake.

Researches at Brown University believe that P57 in an active substance in the hypothalamus. This is the area of the brain that controls numerous drives in our bodies such as appetite, sex, sleep and mood. It is believed that P57 has the ability to increase ATP, the compound responsible for increasing energy levels in our bodies. Increased levels of ATP cause the hypothalamus to send a signal to the brain to stop eating. P57 seems to work a lot like glucose which raises ATP levels and suppresses appetite. The big difference being that P57 contains no calories.

Several studies have been done to determine the effectiveness and safety of hoodia. The results have been very positive for hoodia being a valuable tool as an appetite suppressant.

Hoodia has been on the market for several years now and it has shown itself to be very effective in weight loss. People that supplement with hoodia have been shown to be much more successful in achieving their weight loss goals than people who do not. Another positive fact for using hoodia is that it is a natural product, without the side effects associated with the use of some diet pills.

If you are considering supplementing you diet regimen with hoodia there are a few things that you should do to make sure that you are getting the most possible from it.

* The active ingredient as we mentioned above is P57. You want to make sure that the supplement that you choose lists this on the label.

* Choose the form of hoodia that is most appropriate for you. Some people that have problems swallowing pills or capsules may want to opt for a powdered or chewable product.

* Choose a manufacturer that has the words "Fast Absorption" or "Slow Release" on their product. This may give you faster results and longer lasting effects.

* Do not use a product that contains caffeine or other stimulants.

* You should use hoodia exclusively. Experts suggest that you do not take any other dietary aids while taking hoodia; this will allow you to access its effectiveness.

People that have shown success with supplementing with hoodia have pointed out several benefits of using hoodia in their weight loss plan. I have listed some of these below.

* Hoodia naturally eliminates the feeling of hunger. Many other diet aids do not do this; therefore feeling of hunger will cause discomfort and eventually undermine your efforts.

* You can take hoodia when you do not have the time to exercise. By reducing your caloric intake it reduces your need for physical exercise to reduce weight. You also have to be aware that physical exercise has many other benefits besides weight loss.

* Since hoodia comes from a plant it is more natural than many other diet aids. This makes hoodia more natural for your body to accept. It works by sending messages to your brain to simulate feelings of fullness.

In conclusion, hoodia may be a very effective addition to your weight loss program. Remember that to be successful in losing weight you first need to have a commitment. Take some time and think about what type of regimen is most suited to you and that you can stick with. And best of luck to you.
