Another area that is ripe for social networking, especially in building your own practice locally, is to have your own blog or weblog. You can set up a weblog on a number of different sites, from Amazon to Google.
One of the best known, utilized and administered sites around the world is WordPress at www.WordPress.com or wwwl.WordPress.org. Get yourself on WordPress to read all about it. You'll get an in-depth education in a short period of time.
Setting up a blog is relatively easy. In fact, you can have your staff do it.
If you are taking our lead and writing even small amounts of material on a frequent basis on health tips, news, events and promotions, you can have a separate blog for your practice that can get you noticed quickly. You should link your blog to your website.
Make sure there is an opportunity to have comments posted. If you're going to accept comments, make sure you review them so you have 100% control over what ultimately gets posted and is associated with your name.
One negative area that I've found is unscrupulous people, even some vendors searching out doctors. Spamming can be huge!
Be careful.
That's another good reason you want to have complete control over any blog and its content 100%.
The other thing with maintaining a blog is doing so frequently.
Daily is best, but at the least every week. It's not a bad idea to link and subscribe to other blogs using the real time syndication feature, the RSS feed. If you'd like to learn more about RSS feeds, simply Google them.
iGoogle has a tremendous amount of information on blogs you want to subscribe to and receive updates from as they post to their sites.
Many of these sites, such as the blog we've been running for some time at Perfect Practice, can serve as a significant resource.
For example, our blog has a search feature, as does our members-only website. By using the search feature, you can put in a category such as "marketing," "staffing," "staff training" or "finances" and pull up a whole wealth of information in seconds. It can help you tremendously.
The last comment regarding areas of expertise in social networking is the whole idea of publishing.
It's been said that everybody has at least one book in them. Having one book published and my second one half completed, it's not as difficult as you think as long as you maintain some consistency.
We have other member doctors who have had this experience as well. This is the single most important thing you can do to gain considerable credibility with your own clientele and practice.
Just by investing a little bit of time on writing, blogging, social networking, etc. you can really start to reap the benefits, especially when you tie it in with all your other marketing.
Do this right, and it's very powerful.
Neglect it, and likely be left in the dust by much more tech-savvy doctors and patients for many years to come!
It's all up to you!!
