Now days retail premises are like.... so retro, so 1980's. 20 years ago one of the main ways of generating a decent income was retail - the high street in any town was the place to be.

Most small businesses at some time or another dabble in a bit of retail and quickly learn about overheads, rent, rates and advertising.

Basically - retail premises are expensive. Even after a few years of recession Landlords still ask high rents and local councils demand ridiculous rates (and you won't even get your bins collected).

Once you've bitten the bullet and plunged into the retail black hole you will start thinking about how to promote your new shop and get footfall through the door.

In the past it was simply a matter of placing an advert in the Yellow Pages, Thomson's Local or local press - well not any more. Now days paper adverting is as retro as retail shops, you need to work harder to attract customers and one of the best solutions is to simply give things away.

When promoting any business you need to look for a cost effective method and think outside the box. You need to do something different from your competitors and be creative. Offering special deals like 2 for 1 is all very good - but you need customers in your shop to see the deals in the first place.

Giving away promotional balloons printed with your company details is a fantastic way of attracting potential customers. Helium balloons with balloon printing are fun, vibrant and attract attention. Once your message is floating above a pram or held by a child it moves around your local shopping area shouting your message and as everybody loves something that's free - they will soon find your store.

Give the printed balloons away from the rear area of your shop so potential buyers need to walk past everything to get to the balloons. Helium balloons work best and attract the most attention. If your store is located in a shopping mall you can give away air filled balloons on cups and sticks, this will keep the centre manager happy and eliminate any chance of alarms being activated.

Most importantly, it's not as expensive as you may think. 1000 Promotional balloons can cost as little as £139 for a 1 colour print, then you'll just need helium, valves or ribbon and you're away.

Set goals and have promotional days. Use your promotional balloons on special occasions and compare your sales to normal days. Test and measure to calculate if the are working for you - because advertising that works costs nothing.
