A large range of electric pianos and keyboards can be found on the market at very varied prices. With designs ranging from general purpose keyboards with lighter keys to the more professional digital pianos which are designed to emulate the sound of a real grand piano or upright piano, which type is best for you or your child?
Below I discuss the 3 common types on the market and each of their benefits:
Piano-Style Keyboards
More and more people are taking to these instruments and they are now very popular due to the fact that they are a good piano like alternative, whilst remaining competitively priced compared to digital pianos. They are normally found with a full 76 note keyboard, weighted piano keys and a selection of impressive acoustic piano sounds. They usually also come armed with a selection of other sounds such as a harpsichord and various strings. More and more manufacturers are adding this type of keyboard to their range so there will be plenty of choice to fit your budget.
General Purpose Keyboards
These keyboards tend to come with approximately 61 notes instead of the 76 found on an upright piano. They also come equipped with a large range of rhythm tracks and sounds to accompany your planning. These are not professional quality backing tracks but nevertheless useful. Whilst these models are not generally considered a professional alternative, some models are surprisingly impressive and offer a decent budget alternative to the other types of keyboards and piano. Many of these now come with touch sensitive keys for more realistic playing. As a result of the good performance and budget price these types of keyboard can often be found in schools.
Digital Pianos
Due to the excellent digital sampled reproduction of real acoustic piano sounds, these are the choice of the professionals. The hammer action piano keys are often a really excellent emulation of the performance and feel of real piano keys. They are incredibly popular due to the fact that they take up much less room than a real grand piano, will never require tuning, can be more easily transported and can be effectively amplified to high volumes. Whilst this is the more expensive of the three options, they are still considerably cheaper than a real grand piano.
So there are the three popular choices of electric pianos and keyboards. With the difference in cost and performance, hopefully you will now go on to select the perfect one to suit your needs and more importantly your pocket.
