Is your office space functioning exactly how you hoped it would, or are the first signs of problems starting to appear? Have you considered a formal study to see what employees think of the current office space layout and what improvements they think could be made to greatly improve daily life and productivity?
Without doubt it's easy to just keep going with everything staying exactly as it is - let's face it, it's a lot of grief to start changing everything. The problem is that the current layout could even be hindering employees rather than helping them do their job.
Maybe now is the time to start asking some questions:
- Do employees spend too much time traveling between the various rooms in the office to get tasks done?
- Do certain areas and rooms remain unused for large parts of the day? Conference rooms, meeting rooms, and cubicles are all worth a look.
- Are some areas way too overcrowded therefore hindering quality output?
- Are there ample furnishings for everyone to avoid fighting over desks etc?
- Is there enough equipment to go round or do you need to wrestle your way to the photocopying machine?
- Are employees using cushions on their office chairs to make otherwise terrible chairs usable?
- Is overcrowding forcing employees to use the coffee shop far more than they should be?
- Is the space cluttered full of bags, coats and umbrellas due to lack of storage?
- Is the lighting good enough or are additional lamps being brought in to compensate?
- Is the ventilation and air conditioning up to speed or are employees having to find an open window for some cool air?
- Is the heating up to speed or are employees wrapped in layers of clothing?
- Is your office space just plain gloomy with dated or dull decoration?
- What about the pictures on the wall - are they uplifting, feel-good pieces of art, or just plain awful?
Summary
There are undoubtably many more points to consider but if research shows that your office space fails on many of the above - action is needed and fast! You may well be able to address all of the problem areas yourself as many points wont require special tools or workers. On the other hand, you may need to bring in a professional team to deal with far reaching issues and also to get the job done more quickly. Whichever way you go, it will be money very well spent as results in the office will show!
