First we should perhaps ask “What exactly is a yeast infection?” Or “What is a yeast” for that matter. Let’s start at the beginning. Yeasts, as you probably know, are small microorganisms that are ubiquitous in our environment. There are unicellular fungi. And by ubiquitous, I mean they are literally everywhere. Leave the lid off a pan of soup for a few minutes and it will be colonised by all sorts of yeasts, molds and fungi whose spores are simply floating around in the air all the time. The spores are the reproductive parts of these organisms and they are microscopically small. That’s why they are able to be carried on the lightest of air currents.
Of course they land on our bodies too. They land on our skin, on any open wounds or cuts or abrasions. They land on the food we eat. They land everywhere. Usually our immune systems take care of all these invaders. Our skin has antibiotic properties and white cells circulate in our blood stream to attack any foreign organism, no matter how small. So why do we sometimes fail to repel these yeast spores and succumb to their efforts to colonise a new food source (ie us!)?
I’ll discuss this in another article but for now, we want to know about home remedies for yeast infections and whether they work or not. Largely it depends on whether you are dealing with a yeast infection of the skin or whether the infection is internal. If the yeast infection is accessible then it is possible to apply some sort of substance to it. In the past people used to apply vinegar, especially cider vinegar, boric acid, Epsom salts, whisky and honey to infected areas. But these were very limited in their success rate. The reason that yeasts and fungi are so ubiquitous is because they are resistant to many of these chemicals.
Obviously, if the infection is internal it will need a different approach and home remedies for yeast infections that are internal were limited to consuming drinks that were thought to be detrimental to yeasts. But such drinks are very few and far between. Almost any concoction that is toxic enough to affect a yeast organism will be toxic to the human body too, so this really isn’t an option. However – don’t despair!
There are ways to get rid of yeast infections that are really very effective and that do not involve drugs or chemicals. In fact, the treatment of yeast infections is one of the areas where natural methods have often proven to be more effective than conventional medicine. But you need to know what you’re doing.
