Acne is a skin disease that is generally found on facial skin and is most likely to develop during an individuals adolescent years. However, acne is a skin disease that can affect anyone of any age, in fact many adults suffer the disease in their 30's and 40's and even into their 50's and this doesn't just affect the facial area; it can spread onto the neck and back as well. At some point in our lives we will face an outbreak but, thankfully, most of these cases can be cleared up with over-the-counter remedies but what do you do when this simply isn't working?

The only way to really describe acne is small swellings on the surface of the skin. Some people suffer with it more than others. For people who suffer a more serious level of acne, you will find it more difficult to clear up. It will take additional time and effort but by doing so you will ease social and physical discomfort and you will give your skin the best chance possible to avoid scarring. So what should you be doing if you do suffer from a serious case of acne?

The best acne skin care advice is to start with simple solutions and gradually work your way up to more intense ones. For example, start with aspects such as making sure all makeup is removed before you go to bed and try using a good toner on your skin. This will help to tighten your pores to stop dirt and grease getting into them that then goes on to cause acne. Bacteria in your pores is a major cause of acne so start with reducing the amount of bacteria through the use of toners. To do this, you should aim to use toners that contain aspects such as peroxide and benzalkonium chloride, which will help rejuvenate your skin quicker.

Along with toners, you should change your diet. Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, ensure that you are getting good nutrition - zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, and chromium have very positive effects on your skin so make sure you include them in your diet.

If you feel you have tried everything to get your skin in better condition without the desired effect, you should visit your doctor as they will be able to refer you to a dermatologist. By seeing a dermatologist, you know you are in good hands. They will be able to analyze the condition of your skin and advise you on the best course of action to take. In many cases, they will inform you of any facial washes and/or moisturizers that will be able to reduce inflammation and help close up your pores. In other instances, you will find that the dermatologist will prescribe you some medication that, along with a good skin care routine, will clear up your acne.

Whatever form of treatment you receive for your acne, it is important that you maintain a routine. The reason being is that most treatments take time to work. Treatments generally take between two and eight weeks before you start to see any significant improvements so don't give up on them after a few days! It is important to remember that once your acne is cleared up, you need to continue with the treatment that's working so that your acne doesn't return.
