Think about the last time you were at the beach and take a mental look around. How many different types of bathing suits are being represented? If you're in Italy or in Hawaii, the variety might be slightly smaller than other locations… but you get the idea. Do you find yourself automatically making assumptions about the other men on the beach based upon their choice of swim apparel? Well, you are not alone. A man's choice of swim trunks will generally place him in one of a few stereotyped categories.

So, which one are you?

Board Shorts: Aaahhh, the classic surfer style. Board shorts are the epitome of the Pacific/West Coast lifestyle. These knee length swim trunks are meant to be worn low slung on your hips… yes, a little crack has been known to peek out from time to time. The patterns seen on men's board shorts are nearly endless, making them one of the most customizable style choices around. If you are a fan of board shorts, you're probably a laid back, beach loving dude who has been known to partake in water sports from time to time.

Classic Swim Shorts: The swim short is the bathing suit almost every man over the age of 40 wears when in public. These conservative shorts are usually a healthy bit shorter than their board short cousins and are typically solid colored. There are some patterns available but if you're going with a classic, might as well keep it classic, right? If you are on the beach in a classic pair of swim shorts, you are probably also running around after your kids (or grandkids). Nothing wrong with a classic, dad.

The Speedo: Perhaps the most iconic of all swim apparel choices. The Speedo bathing suit is a favorite topic of discussion in middle school locker rooms and is the clothing of choice for all competitive swimmers, divers, water polo players, and European men of all shapes and sizes. If you're on the beach in a Speedo, you probably have an absolutely rocking' body as these tiny bathing suits leave little to the imagination. Haven't been hitting the gym? Oh well, just pretend you're Italian.

Swim Trunks: If you're hitting the beach in a pair of tiny swim trunks, are saying exactly one thing: Look At Me. These Speedo cousins are made of a similar nylon and spandex blend that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The only difference is that this style is considered "shorts". If you hit the beach in these bad boys, expect a lot of attention from pretty much everyone on the beach. This exhibitionist swim style is not for the shy or conservative.

Finding the right pair of swim trunks is all about personal preference and individual style. Fit and patterns vary wildly within each category so be sure to try on a few different pairs. You might love the look of one pair of board shorts and despise another. Most importantly, hit the beach as often as possible this summer and have fun!

Men's Swim Apparel… What it Says About You. Don't ever surf in a Speedo (and other men's fashion words of wisdom). Wear fashionable board shorts and othe similiar surfing apparel.
