The more regularly you clean your swimming pool, the easier your maintenance routine will be. A clean pool not only looks more inviting, it also enhances the effectiveness of your other swimming pool components and prolongs their lifespan. Here are three nearly effortless ways to ensure a pool that is sanitary and sparkling, starting with incredibly handy pool cleaners.

Maximize convenience. Today's automatic pool vacuums make maintenance wonderfully simple. Rather than resign yourself to spending hours each week by the pool, vacuuming, you can purchase an automatic cleaner that does the job just as effectively. It's as easy as releasing the unit in the water, sitting back with a cocktail and watching it work. Many models will shut off without your intervention, too. Among automatic pool cleaners, you will find three categories to choose from. Suction cleaners are the most economical picks and rely on your pool's suction port or skimmer to suck debris directly into the filter system. Pressure cleaners are attached to the pool return line, but have a mesh bag for the vacuumed contaminants to go in, so they don't clog your filter. The most fuss-free option - it requires no hoses or other attachments - is the robotic cleaner, which also has a bag or holder to store the debris while the vacuum works. Many are computer programmed and feature advanced abilities such as rapid cleaning, wall and step climbing, and sophisticated mapping and sensing technologies.

Spot clean. Don't let a miniscule problem evolve into a gigantic mess. Spend a couple of minutes every few days skimming your pool water for leaves and dead bugs, and scrubbing the tiles free of bacteria and algae, before these contaminants can even reach your filter system or the bottom of your pool. Clean your skimmers and filters regularly, and check your pumps to see if they need to be backwashed. Quick, uncomplicated acts such as these rely on inexpensive pool products like leaf nets, manual brushes and filter cleaning wands to keep your investment tidy. A regular routine is especially important if your pool is situated near a leafy tree or you live in a pollen-prone area. You will also find yourself less reliant on pool chemicals the more often you clean your pool.

That said, don't skimp on the pool chemicals. Chlorine or a similar alternative, such as bromine, is necessary to control your water balance and prevent bacteria and algae growth. Use water test kits to monitor pH balance and chlorine levels. If the weather is hotter or rainier than usual or your pool has seen a lot of activity, you may need to use a shock treatment.

Regular pool accessories maintenance will ease excessive strain on your pool equipment, such as the filter system and pump, so these important pieces are likely to perform better and last longer.
