You don't have to be able to charge waves like Andy Irons or Kelly Slater to look like a surfer when you walk down the street. Surfing has permeated almost all aspects of society over the past decade and that includes the fashion industry. Wearing surf apparel (and looking good while doing it) is easy as long as you keep a few things in mind.
Here are the Do's and Don'ts of surf style:
DO remember that owning all the right surf apparel is not as important as channeling the right surfer attitude. Surfing is an extension of the beach lifestyle. It's all about spending time outside in nature, embracing a casual and social lifestyle, and never being in a hurry to get anywhere. Your clothes and surf accessories should be an extension of this surf inspired attitude and outlook on life.
DON'T ever wear sneakers when you could be wearing flip flops instead. Have you ever watched a surf video and seen your favorite surf pro wearing surf apparel with a pair of high tops in the sand?? The answer is no. Yes, there is a time and place for sneakers and it's usually when the temperature is anywhere below 65 degrees or if a suit is involved but flip flops should be worn whenever possible in all other situations. (Don't even think about putting on a pair of mandles).
DO let your hair grow long. For ladies, this means anywhere past your shoulders. The longer the better. For guys, do whatever you are comfortable with. If you can rock the shoulder length sun bleached look, we think that's hot. Otherwise, the look you're going for is non-stock broker. Get half as many haircuts as you usually do. And if you don't live in a location of year round sun, think about getting some discreet highlights to help with the beach effect.
DON'T overdo it on the makeup ladies. Your surf apparel and surf accessories just won't look right with caked on foundation and Cleopatra eyeliner. Minimal face makeup paired with some lip gloss and mascara is all you need to look like you just came from the beach. If you don't have a natural tan, throw on some bronzer or a little blush to add a bit of healthy color to your complexion.
DO remember that comfort is key when it comes to dressing like a surfer. T-shirts, thermals, some tank tops, board shorts, jeans and a few button down shirts and slacks for nice occasions should be the base of the male wardrobe. Girls surf apparel is all about mix and match bikinis, tiny shorts, tanks, t-shirts, sweet sun dresses, and some jeans and hoodies thrown in there for cooler weather.
As with any style, these are only basic guidelines. Embracing surf style is all about making it your own. You've got to find a look and attitude that you're comfortable with and makes you feel good when you walk out the door. Don't be afraid to experiment and don't worry if you look back on a few photos and cringe. Believe me, we've all been there!
Learn how to wear the hottest surf apparel without looking like you're trying too hard. Casual beach attitude is what surf style is all about.
