Like other extreme board sports, wakeboarding enjoys a cult following. Those who love to wakeboard will travel all over the country and the world to find the perfect spot to perfect their tantrum. The wakeboarding culture is different from that of surfing - primarily because this sport doesn't usually merge with beach culture. It's the lakes that draw these extreme athletes together - often at high altitudes or at some massive desert lake in the middle of nowhere. Different though they are, their devotion to their sport is the same. A devoted wakeboarder will throw on their wake wetsuit and hit the water in the middle of winter or in an alpine lake with water fed directly from a glacier. They love what they do.
Here are some of the top lakes in the United States for wakeboarding:
Lake Powell - Utah/Arizona - This massive man-made lake is 186 miles long and has over 2,000 miles of shoreline with dozens of coves large enough for some private boarding. You won't need a wake wetsuit on this lake as the water is comfortably warm for most of the year. The second most popular activity on Lake Powell: House boating. So grab all of your friends and make a week out of it!
Lake Hazasu - California/Arizona - Lake Havasu is known primarily for the revelers that camp out at Copper Canyon. It's also one of the top spots to ride year round in the United States. Its' desert locations makes for mild winters and blisteringly hot summers - perfect for wakeboarding! Leave the wake wetsuits at home when you hit this desert oasis.
Bull Shoal Lake - Arkansas/Missouri - If you're from the Midwest, you've heard of (and probably been to) Bull Shoal Lake. This gorgeous wooded lake draws some of the top wakeboarders in the world for their annual competitions.
Lake Travis - Texas - If you ever find yourself in the Lone Star State, don't pass up a chance to board on Lake Travis. This lake is in the hill country of Texas, just outside of Austin and it is gorgeous. Besides the beautiful setting, the lake boasts 65 miles of water perfect for boating.
Lake Tahoe - Northern California/Nevada - Unlike its' southern sister, Lake Havasu, Lake Tahoe is not a year round boarding lake. But it does enjoy some of the most gorgeous summer alpine weather in the world. You might need to throw on a wake wetsuit year round on this lake but the beautiful setting and clear waters make it worth the freezing temperatures. When you're done boarding, grab your friends and hit one of the many bars or restaurants that surround the lake.
Lake Shasta - Northern California - Another Northern California gem, Lake Shasta is considered by many wakeboarders to be one of the best spots to ride in the world. The lake has 4 distinct arms - each one the size of another lake. Add in the coves created by the meandering shoreline and you've got a wakeboarders' dream. There is always plenty of room for exploring on Lake Shasta.
Enjoy each of these gorgeous locations with your family and friends. Each of these lakes is the perfect spot for boating and boarding.
The best wakeboarding happens on uncrowded lakes with smooth water and gorgeous scenery. Find out where to find those perfect spots to take out your wakeboards.
