Often people who want to start an ecommerce business think that they can just take an appealing idea, set up a website, and make sales. In the early days of the Internet it was possible but not anymore. Actually one of the easiest ways to find out if your idea is a good one is to go see if anyone else is selling it. If there is already healthy competition that's a great sign. It's much better to start with an idea that already has a market. The last thing you want to do is try to develop a market online that doesn't already exist .

Secondly it's important to decide on how to market your idea. Does it need a website? Or would a growing list of customers that can be e-mailed frequently with product and service offers be better? These are just the beginning components that new marketers need to be aware of in planning how they will sell a product. Next, after having decided how to market it would be smart to structure your business in such a way that maximizes protection and financial benefits. Consulting with an attorney for advice is a highly recommended strategy. Consider setting up a LLC or Corporation. It always pays to be smart in advance.

Open Up a Checking Account

It really isn't a good idea to use a personal checking account with any business. Everyone, no matter what the type of business would benefit from having a business checking account. Don't co-mingle your personal and business funds. Fortunately setting up a business checking account is very easy to do. All that's needed is to find a good bank and provide the identification required. This will usually be your social security number or EIN, starting funds to set up the account, and business license with at least two forms of major identification including a photo ID. If it's a corporation then the articles of incorporation should be included.

Pick a Good Domain Name

If you're going to set up a website one of the most important priorities is choosing the right domain name. Having a very large website that focuses on just one industry will be okay with just a general domain name. For example: golfing.com. However if it's a tightly focused niche inside a larger, heavily trafficked market then going with something like leathergolfshoesforwomen.com is necessary. At a minimum you'll need to know how to choose the right keyword based on the number of searches and how much competition there is for that keyword .This is a science all unto itself!
