In today's global recession economy you might think that tourism would be on the decline. And to some extent it is. However surprisingly the World Tourism Organization has projected a 4% growth continuing indefinitely. All you have to do is look around you to see that people are traveling more today than they ever have. Many countries' economies are based on travel and vacation and could not survive without it. Tourism isn't just for the rich either, the middle class travels extensively and there are destinations available designed just for people who are looking to extend their money and see as much as possible.
As local and global financial problems continue to mount people are finding it increasingly necessary to escape from their problems and routines and take a much needed break. There's nothing more relaxing than traveling to a distant culture that you've never seen before and settling into a new world that you've never experienced . There are tourists for all seasons, all climates, and all cultures. What could be more relaxing than traveling to a tropical paradise to take a break from the harsh reality of winter? Conversely if your normal climate is a hot one nothing is more refreshing than traveling to an exotic location like Alaska and either hiking or cruising through the fjords.
There are so many different types of tourism that it is difficult to list them all here. However there is one that has become increasingly popular over the last decade: Ecological and Sustainable tourism are becoming a very important way to visit countries that are fragile while respecting local customs and economies, indeed building them up rather than taking advantage of them. The trend is to limit the impact on the local economies, natural resources, ecologies, and political structure of some very popular destinations.
Another important trend is people going to the Internet to find information and plan out their trips. It's literally letting your fingers do the walking. Online resources include travel agencies, ebooks, websites, forums, and probably many other valuable sources of information. The Internet is responsible for an explosion of knowledge that makes it much easier for people to find what they're looking for. Coupled with today's ability to travel at will and the availability of knowledge online makes finding the perfect vacation spot easier than it ever has been.
This is the first in a series of articles that will examine some of the more popular vacation spots around the world. We will also take a look at the varying ways that tourism has changed and what to expect in the years to come.
