Let's face it. The more things change, the more things stay the same. When a lot of us were kids, the only way we could see the television shows and movies we wanted, we had to be in front of the TV when they were on. When the video cassette recorder came out, this enabled us to program in a time and a channel and record our favorite shows automatically, and the only concern we had then was whether we'd programmed it correctly, or that we had enough blank tape. But with the advent of the digital video recorder, or DVR, the days of the VCR have pretty much come to an end.
Not only is a DVR much easier to program, but managing your recorded shows is a breeze. No stacks of tapes to sort through and label, no worries about whether the tape is still any good, and definitely no hassles about making sure you had touched all the bases in programming the VCR so you get the right show on the tape. DVR's have definitely revolutionized the way we record TV. But, which one will suit our needs best? That all depends on what you expect and need out of your equipment as there are DVR's that cover virtually every combination of needs available.
Regardless of whether you want to automatically record a show every day so you can time-shift the show to a time when you can watch it, or if you want to record and keep an entire season of shows, virtually any DVR available will do that. Also, most DVR's will allow you to pause, slow motion and even rewind live TV. Even HD DVR's will handle virtually any basic function that you can think of. But there are a lot of functions that the new breed of DVR's will do that may fit your needs to perfection.
There are DVR's available now that will handle hundreds of hours of storage, allowing you to not only record and store entire seasons of shows, but that will have the additional space available to store dozens of movies and specials. Some DVR's even allow for external storage of recordings so you aren't limited by the size of the storage drive in the machine itself. That way you can build an ever expanding library of TV shows and movies without having to worry about ever deleting "old" shows.
Some DVR's allow you to export recorded movies and shows to a portable device for viewing away from your TV. That enables you to record a show at night, transfer it to your portable viewer, and watch it on the bus or train the next day, when you've got time and can sit down and enjoy the show without having to be in front of your TV to watch it.
VCR's freed us from the limitations and whims of TV programmers who invariably put shows on when we couldn't watch. DVR's remove almost every other limitation that VCR's stuck us with. While finding a DVR to do everything you want it to do can leave you with a dizzying array of choices, you do have the choices. Make your list, go find that perfect DVR and enjoy TV when you want to, how you want to. Now is the time for you to truly get everything you want!
