Year after year, in the heat of the summer, many power companies use rolling blackouts in order to prevent their systems from overloading. To enable them to continue to provide power to the greatest number of people, these companies sacrifice the short-term power outages all over their grids. What does this strategy actually cost in terms of real dollars? Granted, it means we only have to sacrifice a few hours per week or per day to try to maintain the stability of the entire power grid, but that also means we are without power for hours at a time.

Even with these efforts, all too often, the grid still isn't stable, meaning the electricity we get to power our computers, our televisions, our homes and offices isn't consistent. Also, along with summer come summer storms. Lightning strikes, heavy rains, and a host of other weather related calamities add even more stresses to the electrical grid. So, how can we keep those rolling power outages and weather issues from costing us money?

Many places simply cannot sustain electrical related issues like voltage drops, power surges, and outages. We buy battery backup and surge suppression units for our homes and offices to protect valuable electronics like HDTV's and computers from being affected by fluctuations in the amount and quality of electricity they're being fed. Surge and spike suppressors prevents too much voltage from getting to those electronics by either limiting the amount of electricity that flows through it or by blowing a protective fuse or circuit to prevent those spikes or surges from getting to that TV or computer and blowing it out instead. Battery backups not only prevent surges and spikes, but they also prevent under voltage or "brown out" situations where the power grid isn't supplying enough power to those same devices. We know that too much voltage will burn out an electronic device whereas too little voltage usually won't. But too little voltage will cause damage to motors like those in refrigerators and freezers. Unfortunately, those units require far more electrical support than you can achieve with the average battery backup. This means when the power goes off in our homes, our refrigerators don't run, and our pumps for wells and aerators for fish tanks don't run. Other electrical and electronics also fail, which may be even more important than worrying whether our milk stays good.

So, what solutions are available? That's where using professional electricians and companies that specialize in taking care of these situations come into play. They've got generations of experience in solving surge and spike problems as well as finding ways to support our homes and businesses when there are electrical issues. While there are any number of "over the counter" solutions, most of them are merely band-aids, and many of them aren't capable of providing support and protection for more than a few moments at best. Finding an electrical contractor who can give you the answers you need is the solution.
