We no longer live in a society where everyone we meet on the street speaks the same language as we do. As a matter of fact, most of us living in the United States may use English as our primary form of communication in our daily lives, but when we go home, the majority of us speak other languages. Whether it is Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Russian or even French or German, these United States are comprised of a wide variety of peoples and languages. And while having a common tongue like English to help us all communicate easily, it is nice for our entertainment and news to be in our native language. And that's where the international satellite programming packages comes into play.

Not only do these programming packages provide us with news, entertainment and other shows from around the world, but it also gives them to us in our native languages. This gives us the ability to enjoy familiar shows and channels from our native countries, but also gives us the ability to pass on our cultural nuances and heritage to our children, that way when we visit our respective homelands, they can feel at home because there are some very familiar shows on TV. Even though those shows may not be on during a reasonable hour in the US, being able to record them on a DVR (digital video recorder) means we can time shift them to a time when we can watch them.

Quite often, the news and other informational shows provided will have a lot more information about places and people we are more familiar with than places in the US. Whether it is the politicians or celebrities from our homeland, or even news and weather from our home province or district, being able to keep up with what is occurring there can be very important, especially during times of crisis. Having a way to keep up with events as they occur instead of having to wait for the news to filter in from US sources or from the internet enables us to either take comfort or to see how efforts are progressing to handle the crisis.

However, the main limitation of the international packages is the fact that many of the major languages aren't represented at all. While there isn't a way to cover all the channels we may be used to having from our home country. And because of the limitations, many channels, shows and newscasts are simply unavailable. While there are many reasons why complete global support and coverage can't be supported, the fact that so many languages can't have at least some level of representation is a shame.

Having international programming packages available for several cultural and language groups is a good thing, Subscribe if you can, and enjoy programming in your home language. And if your language isn't a part of the package available, definitely call or write and make your voice heard. Satellites span the globe, and the global community gets smaller every day, so why shouldn't you be able to enjoy satellite programming your way?

After a long week on the road, Johney Maron looks forward to a weekend of relaxation. Friday has become "family night" and thanks to their new international channels, there is always something new to enjoy. DISH Network's digital TV recorder (DVR) allows him to catch up on all his favorite shows he missed while traveling. Visit DISH Network today and start enjoying your own favorite channels.
