Many of us celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with the standard traditions held from generation to generation. However, some have developed little variations and sometimes even more unusual traditions to celebrate this holiday as well. Regardless of whether your traditions are, for lack of a better way to say it, traditional, or if you and your family celebrate in your own special way, Thanksgiving is a day of appreciation for all we have and the amazing people who have impacted our lives.
The most common traditions center around turkey, stuffing, family and friends getting together to share a great meal. However, the way the meal is prepared could be very different. Some of us go turkey hunting and then deep fry the bird after we get one while others go to the store and pick out the size that will fit the size of the group. And even some will call a caterer and request the bird with "all the fixings." Gathering together to watch football on TV after lunch and zonking out on the couch has become yet another of those traditions that we may poke fun at, but still happens year after year by a large group of the ones making the jokes. And for some of us, it's the time of year when we sit down with our Christmas card list and start making out cards and writing letters to those friends and family that are too far away to see every day.
Since Thanksgiving Day is seen as the "beginning" of the Christmas holiday season, many people put up their Christmas trees and decorations. This kicks off a month-long celebration of Christmas, and really adds an air of anticipation and overall energy throughout the house. Another tradition has become sitting down with all the sale papers to see what the best deals are going to be on the Black Friday sales the next day. While these traditions are actually fairly new in terms of popularity, they have definitely become deeply ingrained in American culture.
All in all, we have a great history of traditions we honor every year at Thanksgiving. From sending and receiving gifts of food wrapped in Thanksgiving paper to falling asleep in front of the TV, we've got the old standards. And by sitting down with your kids after a great Thanksgiving meal, showing them your traditional methods of celebrating the day, and ramping up the holiday season, you can pass your traditions on to them, a legacy of love and appreciation for all that Thanksgiving represents.
Thanksgiving paper, really? Who has heard of Thanksgiving paper? Apparently everyone but Johney Maron as it on his list of things to order. When planning a holiday, ordering items such as paper, stationery, and invitations early is key. You don't want to have to send mismatched invitations to your party because all they had left in the clearance section was purple turkey and polka-dot pumpkins.
