A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is a process that requires a significant amount of detail review and especially overall health exams including medical.
However, the majority of individuals who have been diagnosed with a patient's self test for adult ADD/ADHD reached this conclusion just by looking at a list of symptoms which might easily have been from diagnosing themselves or, in the case of a child, reporting from parents, teachers, and caregivers. Many people are being medicated solely on the rushed diagnosis of a family physician who really doesn't have the time to discuss the condition in depth and who likely fails to recommend the individual for further testing; testing that might rule out other common disorders, or that might even point to nothing more than undesirable behavior.
The conclusion is that ADD/ADHD patients are being told that they do have the condition while in reality they do not really have, and then there are the ones who really need to be treated for ADD/ADHD and are looked over. The extremes of diagnosing ADD/ADHD is a big issue for those of the medical community, the schools and parents seeking to manage behavioral problems in children, and, most of all, the people who are being misdiagnosed. There are a number of medical conditions that imitate ADD/ADHD and cause confusion in the doctors which causes the wrong conclusion when quality examinations are not performed in which a proper comparisons of signs of each individual carefully with every available condition rubric.
The symptoms of ADD/ADHD are so obtuse that they can easily be attributed to depression, anxiety, specific learning disabilities, early onset bipolar disorder, Tourette's Syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, sensitivity to foods, cranial trauma, dental diseases (such as abscessed root canals or mercury toxicity from fillings), family dynamics problems, or traumatic events!
Having ADD/ADHD as the correct conclusion in an exam is surprisingly rare. The fact that symptoms of many conditions and disorders are so often mistaken for ADD/ADHD calls for scrutiny of the diagnostic process. The most success in correctly diagnosing ADD/ADHD has occurred with the use of a process called differential diagnosis.
Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary gives the definition of differential diagnosis as "the distinguishing of a disease or condition from others presenting similar symptoms".
Essentially, the process takes place in the following manner:
Deciding on the condition at hand is usually done in a clinic. The clinician uses the information taken from the case files of various patients to create the checklist of potential causes. This is called the differential diagnosis. The clinician then decides what tests to order to help refine the list or identify the specific disease
responsible for the patient's complaints. - Encyclopedia Brittanica
Possibly the crucial aspect of the methodology is "the clinician then decides what tests to order to help refine the list or identify the specific disease".
In the end, this clarification is ignored. Conditions such as food sensitivities and cerebral issues are usually ignored. There are several reasons for this. It is often difficult for a physician to confront a parent when the diagnosis lends more to parenting issues, abusive tendencies, or even just frustration. Doctors have begun to realize that learning about the condition is intimidating to the families and calls for a large commitment that many are reluctant to do. Having ADD/ADHD is not something to cause shame or embarrasement, but it is not acceptable to be showing early.
Questioning if a parent is competent will not win you any medals for politeness and compassion.
The average person resists hearing that they have a phsychological disorder.
Many people will not do what is necessary to ensure that nutritional needs are fulfilled, reactive substances, and that dangerous items are avoided.
There is no effort in just giving prescriptions to someone.
Yet, when laziness is chosen the end result is misdiagnosed patients.
Correct diagnoses of ADD/ADHD can only be done by pointing out what is behind it all while not just giving some pills hoping that it will all go away.
Pinpointing the problem takes more than most doctors want to give. There are many things that we are unaware of and the large medicinal companies hope we don't find out.
