Cooking is one skill that you can always improve. Even seasoned cooks can benefit from learning new tips that will make them enjoy cooking more. New cooks should know the little tricks that make cooking easy. For handy cooking advice that can apply to cooks of any skill level, read on.

When you're trying to cook with an ingredient that's new to you, learn a little about it first. You may be pleasantly surprised about the versatility of new food once you do a bit of research on it. By taking some time to educate yourself before starting anything new in the kitchen, it will certainly pay off in flavor and experience.

Before eating there is cooking, and before cooking there is preparation. This is a vital step to master if you want to produce impressive meals. Gather all of your ingredients well in advance. Check the day before you start to cook to make sure that you have everything that you need to cook the dish you have planned. If you have everything ready, you won't be as worried about preparing the meal, and it's more likely to turn out well.

If you make a huge batch of waffles and pancakes but do not know how to keep them fresh, use the age old tradition of keeping them in the still-warm-oven. Warm the oven so that it reaches 300 degrees. Place each smaller batch on a plate in the oven while you complete the next.

Educate yourself on the potential of colors in your meal preparation. Meals that are full of color are healthy and visually stunning. Colorful garnishments can be chosen for your meals, such as parsley, carrot curls, and raw cherry tomatoes. Work the color angle, and people will treat your dishes like the works of art they are.

Oysters are best when served fresh, but consider the different ways to prepare them. Oysters, while typically eaten raw with lemon juice, have many other methods of preparation. Place oysters that have been opened in a broiler pan. You place a dollop of cream on top to cover them. Add some parmesan cheese and some pepper, then broil until the contents of the pan start bubbling. You can also saute oysters. To saute oysters, dredge oysters through seasoned flour and place in a pan of hot butter and fry for a couple of minutes until golden brown. You can also keep the oysters inside their shells, then bake them. Lay the oysters inside a casserole dish. Put a little bit of butter and a sprinkle of some fresh breadcrumbs on each oyster. Once the oven reaches 425 degrees, bake them for approximately four or five minutes. Serve your oysters once the butter starts bubbling.

Did you ever feel guilty for tossing moldy fruits in the garbage? Do you think it is accepted practice to salvage the fruit by removing the rotting parts? Cutting off rotten bits of fruit will not make them safer. Throw the fruit away as mold can grow beyond just what the eye can see, which could end up making you sick.

Prepare the meal the night before to reduce any stress when you're going to have a complicated meal. You can place all of your ingredients in a designated area so that you can be sure that you have all of the ingredients to prepare the dish. You can then chop fruits or vegetables and measure all dry ingredients that you need for the recipe. You will only have to get everything put together when it's time for you to cook.

Stay healthy by making sure your utensils do not have leftover scraps or any sort of dirt before you use them. If there is leftover food on your utensils from the last meal you cooked, it could contaminate the food you are making now. Failure to clean utensils properly could also spread food borne illness.

Store your spices in a cool, dark place. If they are stored in an area that they are exposed to light, heat and humidity, their shelf life is shortened. When a spice is placed in a cool area with very little light, its life is extended and it will taste better. Better tasting meals are the result of the ingredients you use, including the freshest spices possible.

Keep all dried spices in a dark space that stays room temperature. They will not taste as fresh if they are exposed to light or warmth. Generally, ground herbs and spices stay fresh for around a year, after that they begin to lose their flavor. Whole spices keep their robust flavors for up to five years. If you store them correctly, they will stay fresh for an even longer period of time.

Even expert cooks can learn something new and interesting every once in a while. It is important to learn as much as possible when you are a new cook. Use these tips to see if you can better your cooking skills and enjoy cooking in the kitchen more.
