How do we improve when life keeps throwing us "whammies?" How do we keep standing up and going forward? What's the point? I understand. Believe me, I've been there, done that. I have had some big ones. But I know people who have had harder lives - many people, as a matter of fact. I worked in child welfare, and saw many tragedies. So I have always held to the attitude of gratitude. I am very grateful for everything I've been given. I have 3 wonderful children. They had the gift of intelligence. Not everyone has that, but when you are born with it, you can easily take it for granted. I pointed out to them how fortunate they were and they should use their gifts. Well, they had to figure that out on their own, but they did figure it out!! Thank goodness. We were all very physically able, with 2 arms, legs, hands, eyesight, hearing. There is so much to be grateful for. But when we feel like things are against us, I know it's not easy to remember this. Most of us go to "why me?" But all this attitude does is have us go to self-pity. Now, if self-pity gets you moving, then go for it.

I guess the trick is to figure out what motivates you when things are tough. What gets you moving again? I remember when I was raising children alone and things would go wrong, I would have this sense of putting my nose to the grindstone and "just doing it!" Some days you have no choice. I think I beat Nike to the "Just Do It." Anyway, it would be one foot in front of the other, until I could look around and realize things had improved.

I believe you need to change your beliefs and become optimistic about your future for it to change. There's a saying "If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've been getting." So getting out of the rut that keeps pulling us back is the trick. Eventually, you'll realize you don't go in the rut at all anymore, and what a good feeling. Pretty soon, there won't even be a rut.

I also have experienced "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." Sometimes there's a purpose to adversity and what results in your life because of it is even better. So, I know that my clichés may not make it easier when you get hit with a whammie, I hope you know that your only choice is to get up and keep going, and believe that there is a better life for you. The only other option is to wallow in self-pity. If you are a wallower, you probably wouldn't be reading this article, or be on this website.

I am sure that the more "whammies" you handle, the number of them will decrease and your life will get better and better. Do you believe it?
