I love to read People and In Style magazine as much as the next guy, so, I would be the last person to condemn anyone for indulging in the latest gossip about my favorite celebrity. However there's one thing that really bothers me when it comes to the treatment of celebrities in the media. Society appears to celebrate every aspect of the celebrity, including, sadly, the criminal side of their existence. There have been so many celebrities in the headlines during my lifetime. Some of them have really come a long way, and I can appreciate that once you've paid your dues to society, whether that's through a penalty imposed by the law, or by putting yourself in a recovery program to fix themselves, and deserve the praise they receive for being accountable for their mistakes and for their valiant attempts at being a good citizen.

But isn't it typical that for every good egg, there's an equally bad one. Over the summer, I heard about a vehicle accident where the celebrity driver was driving drunk and the news merely stated that the former mistress of formerly well loved celebrity perpetuated an accident while driving under the influence and was taken to the emergency room by an emergency medical team. Well, that what was part of the story anyway. What about the person she hit?

The news, both celebrity based, and local news, didn't make a single reference to the injury this intoxicated driver caused to the innocent driver of the vehicle they hit. The report was that the celebrity's vehicle was towed, but the other was not, and that there were no serious injuries. That's it. End of story. Well it wasn't the end of the story for the person that this celebrity injured. Sure, perhaps there weren't any lost limbs, and maybe this person didn't die, but that doesn't they didn't sustain very real, very long-term injuries. First of all, the actual events were that injured party was completely stopped in front of a flagger in a construction zone. Stopped. In the full day light. It was about nine o'clock in the morning and he was on his way to work, while this glorified celebrity was on their way home from a night of drinking and debauchery. So this "celebrity" rammed into the automobile in front of them, and this "celebrity" was intoxicate before she slid behind the steering wheel of the car. Okay, so I'm sure this celebrity will be cited for driving while intoxicated, and may have to pay some fines, and take some courses for drunk driving, but you know what? This unlucky person that was struck by the celebrity is now looking at having to live with their personal injury and property damage to the car alone. Why? Well guess what? Our intoxicated, celebrated, celebrity, who got a write up in the rag mags, and another 15 minutes of glory, chose to hit the road, drunk, without a thought to anyone but themselves, in a car they hadn't insured.

So what do you think? Did this celebrity get the attention they were due? Another 15 minutes in the spotlight, after their "mistake" ruined the lives of the injured party and all the family who loved and relied on them. That little slice of news managed to slide by forgotten. Let's stop idolizing celebrities for the bad choices they make, and get real about the long lasting problems they create for all us regular folks.
