Although not contagious, Psoriasis remains to be one of the major dermatological concerns nowadays. Psoriasis is an unsightly disease that primarily affects the skin. Most of the people afflicted with this disease wear long sleeves to hide the ugly red marks. Sometimes, if the patient is lucky, the red marks appear only on skin regions that can be hidden.

How Does Psoriasis Start?

A chronic autoimmune disease is characterized by a faulty immune system. In simple terms, the body does not have enough power to stop the abnormal growth of skin cells. When scaly skin patches appear on top of existing patches, reddening of the skin and patchiness happens. The most common areas affected are the elbows and knees where the skin is naturally drier than the rest of the body. Silvery white appearance of skin patches is evident in these regions.

What is plaque Psoriasis? The most common form of Psoriasis is characterized by plaques on various regions all over the body.

Flare Ups and Treatment Options

Moisturizing the regions affected by the disorder may relieve some of the itchiness but this is a chronic recurring condition so further treatment is needed. The cause of Psoriasis may be genetic in nature so you won't be able to stop it unless you really take care of your skin. Stay away from stress. Most patients also complain that Psoriasis becomes more frequent during stressful situations.

Sometimes, extreme environmental conditions may trigger Psoriasis. Keep a good hypo-allergenic sunblock on and protect yourself from chilly drafts whenever you can.

Psoriasis symptoms differ from one person to another. The frequency of flare ups may also depend on the diet and lifestyle of a person.

What a patient can do is to take extra care of the affected body parts. What you can do is to make sure you moisturize and cleanse the area regularly to avoid flare ups. Any skin irritation may trigger the disease. There are also a number of Psoriasis remedies that a person can find online.

Spend a good portion of the morning sunning yourself. Although you probably want to hide your patches of red or scaly skin, it is best to expose the affected area to sunlight on a daily basis. In your backyard when no one is around, you can simply wear shorts and a sleeveless shirt so that the morning sunlight can touch your Psoriasis infected skin.
