Stress can be a difficult and complex process to handle. In using a range of stress management and stress relief techniques many people overlook one of the most important and powerful influences on your stress levels. It is your own self-talk.

WHAT YOUR MIND REALLY TELLS YOU

But what is self-talk? Very simply, your self-talk is what you tell yourself in your own head about you and the world around you. It is what your mind tells you about a situation you are experiencing and the degree of stress, worry and anxiety you are feeling about it all. You are not often aware of your own self-talk as it goes on quietly in your head. But it is very powerful. Your own self-talk actually becomes part of your psyche and therefore your belief systems, attitudes and your unique view of the world.

NEGATIVE THINKING INCREASES YOUR STRESS

When your self-talk is very negative about yourself then it increases your own feelings of stress and worry. When it is negative about the world around you this too makes you more anxious, apprehensive and distrustful. If you never balance negative self-talk with any positive thoughts then you will become increasingly stressed out and distressed.

STRESS MANAGEMENT AND STRESS RELIEF WITH SEVEN STEPS

It is now time to change this pattern of excessive negative talk about yourself. It vital that you develop stress management and stress relief strategies to deal with this negative self-talk. When you feel like you have made a mistake, then this is a great opportunity to practice changing your self-talk. So here are 7 steps to help you to change this negative self-talk when you have made a mistake.

Step 1. Recognize that you are only human. You are not superhuman and attempting to be superhuman will only result in more pressure and mistakes.

Step 2. Understand that we all make mistakes, even you. The mistakes you make are very rarely life threatening.

Step 3. Tell yourself you forgive yourself when you make a mistake. Holding on to guilt achieves nothing and gets in the way of your own stress management.

Step 4. Do not dwell on actions that have gone, you cannot reverse them now. It is not the mistake that you need to focus on but what you can learn from it for the future.

Step 5. See it no longer as a mistake but as a challenge. A challenge to focus on how you will alter and change your actions in the future.

Step 6. Concentrate now on responding differently in the future when you find yourself in a similar situation.

Step 7. Decide to let go of this pressure-filled and stressful negative self-talk. Swap it for positive change and challenge self-talk from now on.

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO USE STRESSED OUT THINKING

Life is far too short to spend your time and your energy dwelling in a negative self-talk pattern every time you make a mistake. Follow these 7 steps and you will begin to let go of that thinking and dramatically reduce your level of anxiety and stress.
