I'm a recent college graduate who wants to live the life of a grownup, on a not-so-grown-up budget. I want to make use of my first very own apartment. Not to mention I need to see my friends often to keep my sanity in this new, busy working girl life. So, hosting apartment parties frequently is essential. To have all my friends around me, without the guilt of huge grocery receipts the next day, I've had to learn fun, cheap ways to host a party. Like these:
A wine and cheese party
Usually, you throw the party and guests bring you a bunch of useless gifts life coffee table books or cutting boards. Useless for the purposes of that particular party, that is. Why not have them spend their money in a way you could really use it? Have each guest contribute to the party a little bit. A wine and cheese party is great because it's minimal pressure. If each person just brings one bottle of wine, one block of cheese, one jar of olives—whatever you like—you have a full party. And your guests felt like they barely did anything at all. Not to mention, there is no shame in bringing a bottle of two-buck chuck.
Karaoke party
There is always the issue of entertaining. All the good food and wine in the world won't make a party good if people are bored. Instead of trying to entertain, let your guests be the entertainment. Find out if any of your friends have a karaoke machine. There are plenty of simple ones that just hook up to your TV. If you already have one, even better! Once everyone has had a few cocktails, they won't feel insecure about their vocal techniques. If you have a friend who is a phenomenal singer, great! Maybe she can provide a few free singing lessons while she is there. Or even inspire your friends who want to be a singer.
Pot Luck
Everybody loves these. It's just like having a mini buffet in your home. And who doesn't love getting to try a ton of different types of food? Your guests get to show off their cooking techniques, and pick up dozens of recipes from the other guests. Meanwhile, all you have to do is make maybe one or two dishes, when you might be having a group as big as 20 people coming.
