Think of your carry on as your life savor. It might have to be! If your luggage is lost, and you're in a foreign place where you barely know how to ask for directions to the drug store, you'll have nothing but what is in your carry-on. So bring these:
One pair of nice shoes:
These can be fancy sandals for a warm climate, regular heels for a temperate climate or heeled booties for a cold one (knee high boots usually won't fit in a carry-on). Even if you don't have anything nice planned, you never know what nice local might invite you out!
Multi-purpose skirt:
Usually a bell-shaped and knee length skirt is good for this. The shape is playful enough for daytime, and the length is formal enough for the evening. Try one with more muted colors. Bright yellow Daisys don't exactly suit dinner parties or the theater.
Multi-purpose jacket:
A blazer is great for this. It can be worn with just about anything—jeans, a skirt, even shorts if the top is casual enough. Roll the sleeves up during the day for a casual look, and roll them back down and consider dressing it up with a brooch at night time.
iPod or music device:
You're going to be on buses, trains, planes, sitting in stations and airports next to people who you do not know for certain have showered that day or in the back of a cab with an annoying driver. Bring your iPod! Just don't be that annoying person singing along. Or if you are going to, learn how to sing well first. I've been on too many planes and trains with the careless person screeching along to their music in the back row.
Basic makeup:
Maybe you're high maintenance and your toiletries usually get a whole suitcase to themselves but, make sure to pack the basics in your carry-on. Ask yourself "if I could only bring three items of makeup, what would they be?" Pack those in your carry-on.
ID's and all money matters:
Check book, extra credit cards, drivers license, passport. These should stay with you most times when you are travelling. To cover your bases, put one form of ID and one credit card in your suitcase, and another form of ID and another credit card in your carry-on. That way if in a worse case scenario, one gets stolen or lost, you have a backup.
