As a writer who works from home, I appreciate all the freedom the Internet gives me. I have even become a little lazy, getting frustrated with companies who do not allow me to do all of my business with them on a website but actually make me call or (gasp!) go in in person to resolve my issue. I realized perhaps I want a 100% cyber life so, I began to muse on all of the things that I can do online and the benefits of that. All of the below activities used to take hours of in-person action, and can now be done from bed in your PJ's.
Work online: many people never even meet or hear the voices of their clients, bosses, or—in my case—editors. The stress of that face-to-face time, in which you analyze a person's facial expressions, can be completely eliminated. If you don't have phone calls, even the possibility to analyze the intonations in someone's voice can be eliminated. You can be forever unaware that an employer or client has ever even been upset with you, because their emotions cannot be read in an email.
Compare prices: If you wanted to, you could find out what a certain pair of jeans cost in nearly every location in the world that offered them. When you used to have to spend hours driving around, or at the very least waiting on the phone for customer service, to compare prices on an item, today you can discover the best deal within minutes, making it the ultimate deal. Why? Money saved, and almost no time spent.
Start a relationship: With online dating, you can see photos of a person in different settings, different outfits, with different facial expressions—in just about every facet of their life—before even meeting them. If they provide enough information, you can even feel emotionally close to the person before ever having been physically close to them.
Learn activities that normally require hands-on training: Being able to read a text book or article online does not seem too revolutionary today, but a video I recently saw of an actual singing instructor and student having a lesson completely over the computer, using audio and video technology, made me realize that activities that used to require hands-on instruction, like singing, playing the piano, even yoga, can be learned online. All you need is a built-in camera and quality audio.
