Work parties are awkward things. They are supposed to be a place where your co-workers and employers get to know "other sides" of you, but at the same time, you know that you can't show all of your other sides. So which ones do you show? Here are some tips:

Dress sassy-professional:

Add a little bit of your own style to your usual professional attire, but only a little. Wear a funky t-shirt under your fitted blazer, or one or your favorite headbands, a pair of fierce high heels, or bold jewelry. But, this is not the time to wear a sultry dress, or your ripped jeans and spiked choker necklace. Unfortunately, there are just some outfits that will make it so that your co-workers never look at you as a professional again, even if you wear them in a non-professional setting. Also remember, since so much has been done so that women may be treated equally in he work place, you are counteracting that movement if you dress overtly sexualized. If you want to be treated as an equal in the work place, dressing ultra-feminine and showing off all your curves and cleavage at a work function isn't going to make that happen. Same goes for men--wearing a super tight muscle shirt doesn't scream "treat me like an equal." It more likely screams "be intimidated by me" or "be attracted to me."

The right amount of fun:

If there is alcohol, have a drink or two. But don't get wasted. You might end up shamelessly flirting with a co-worker, talking badly about your boss, or singing an uncomfortable rendition of a very sexual song on the karaoke machine. Or with no music at all…This happened at a work party I was at once. Apparently one co-worker had hit up the bar a bit too much and decided that everyone should work on their singing techniques in a group rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing." To her horror, no one else joined in and now everyone knows she is in great need of some singing lessons.

Learn about your boss:

This is the perfect time to make nice with your boss. Learn about his or her family, favorite vacation spots, dog, preferred drink—whatever it may be. Anything that you can draw on later in the elevator or brief encounter in the coffee room so you can show them you pay attention.
