Backgammon is a strategic board game, usually played by two players. Contemporary backgammon games are available in both live and online versions, which are based on the same basic rules, and practice the same general backgammon techniques.
The existence of different techniques that may be used, in order to play backgammon games, enhances the diversity, interest and thrill; a quality most games are lacking. There are three backgammon techniques:
Regular backgammon games - matches played by 2 rivals for scores or for virtual/real money. Those backgammon games may include a single game or a series of backgammon games, according to the players' pre agreement.
Backgammon Tournaments - multi-player matches played for a prize. Backgammon tournaments require an entrance qualification and include many different matches, and at least a few rounds. Backgammon tournaments are played according to a specific game structure and the players have no influence on choosing their rivals.
Backgammon Games vs. computer - available at the online version only. This technique is used mostly by beginners for initial practicing.
Regular backgammon games and backgammon tournaments share the same fundamentals; however, they differ in their rhythm, structure, number of players, game conditions, qualifications and time frame; therefore they should be experienced and practiced separately.
Regular backgammon games have dozens of variants, mostly available offline; all played by the same method. The classic western backgammon is the most popular variant, used in all backgammon websites, but some local variants have became popular around the world and are played for fun and for extra exercise. Among those variants you can find the American Acey Ducey, modern variations such as hypergammon and nackgammon and traditional backgammon games such as the Greek Tavli.
The same applies to backgammon tournaments; there are many different types of backgammon tournaments that are altered by the number of competitors, the number of rounds and the way to eliminate players from the competition; however, they all use the same method of starting with multiple participants that narrow down to only one winner. Among the most common backgammon tournaments that are conducted both online and offline are the Knockout tournament, Swing and event tournaments.
There are exceptional components in both genres. For instance, regular backgammon games include the chouette backgammon subcategory, which is a game of a single player playing against two players or more; and backgammon tournaments include special tourneys for teams.
None of the techniques can brag for being the best one. Each method has its own values and benefits, and of course its limits and disadvantages. A full comprehension of both methods provides you with a lot more than just additional fun and excitement; it is also highly important for promoting your backgammon skills. Backgammon tournaments are considered to be the most complex and difficult backgammon technique, although eventually, the crucial factor of all is the skill level of the opponent, standing in front of you. Getting acquainted with both genres and investing time to practice the two of them is definitely the right way to develop a real mastery in backgammon games.
