Its been said so many times by experts you don't know what to believe. Elizabeth Hurley recently stated that she never eats breakfast and saves her calories for later in the day, much to the horror of the health experts. Go to America and breakfasts are fit for a king. Choose from giant bagels, waffles and hash brown to a variety of eggs that leave you wondering if you speak the same language. Over here its simply a fried egg, over there its over easy, sunny side up, over medium and over hard!! They have pancakes with maple syrup and egg white omelettes and the most delicious bacon.

My particular choice is the continent. Who does croissants like the French, along with pain au chocolat, café au lait and maybe some fruit and yoghurt. You'll never find bacon and eggs on a French breakfast menu. Croissants are eaten for breakfast and sometimes for an afternoon snack although French children often prefer pain au chocolat. They are eaten with jam or dipped in a coffee bowl. Its considered a major faux pas to serve them with butter.

A typical German breakfast falls somewhere between a deli platter and a continental breakfast. They fill their plates with continental meats and cheeses along with a million different breads, with sweet toppings like jam, marmalade and honey. They are famous for their breads and most Germans would say it's the topping that highlights the flavours of the bread. They change their tune completely if the topping is sausage. The average German consumes 67 pounds of sausage per year and they have a famous saying ' Es ist mir Wurst' Its sausage to me!

Whilst on holiday in Italy we were thrilled to get a huge variety of salamis and mortadella with ciabbattas to keep us going till lunchtime. However Italians in Italy eat cornetti which is their version of a croissant, a crescent shapes pastry that goes hand in hand with cappuccino. This is normally eaten standing in a bar chatting with friends. In general Italians have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to breakfast. Apparently lots of coffee and equally as many cigarettes are the chosen option.

My own favourite is Greece where we were offered delicious platters of watermelon with grapes and strawberries. The healthy option had never tasted so great. Not sure if it was the fruit that is grown on a seasonal basis and only picked when its at its most delicious or simply the fact that it was prepared for us. Far more delicious that cornflakes and toast.

Smoothies are another great way to start the day. You get one of your five a day, they fill you with energy and can be eaten on the run or sat and savoured.

For me the best way to have breakfast is on the week-end when you can get the papers, have someone cook it for you, have endless cups of tea and chill out till lunchtime.
