In our world today, the concept of becoming an entrepreneur has gained a great deal of popularity. The individual passion for life, for a higher sense of quality, for achieving greater balance between work and family, and in achieving a sense of personal development beyond what a corporate career can provide has led many individuals into starting their own businesses.
You're Responsible For Every Aspect
An entrepreneur or solopreneur has to assume greater responsibility than in a position in the corporate world, because of the intrinsic accountability each assumes for its success or failure and the risks inherent in the outcome. Ambition and personal pride lead the entrepreneur to learn and use business standards they might never consider when working in the corporate world, because those standards are handled by others. In their own business, each entrepreneur must handle all the details of the business and marketing, graphic design and branding are among the key concepts that build the foundation of a budding entrepreneurs business.
A Business Plan, et. al.
Before you answer your first phone call, your business deserves to have a strong foundation built so that later on, you can grow on it. You should have:
* A Business Plan
* A Business Strategy
* A Mission Statement
* An Executive Summary
* A Marketing Plan
* An Action Plan
* Financial Projections
These documents are time consuming to create, soul-stretching to extract from inside your mentality, and critically essential. But once you have them, you can take them to the bank to obtain funding; you can use them to obtain angel / investor funding; and you can take them to a graphic designer to help you create the branding that is such a critical element in driving your business to success.
Branding, Logos, and Graphic Design
Now that you've got the main business documents created (and wasn't that just so much fun?) you might feel some relief. Take a deep breath because you're about to enter into the next level of the foundation for your entrepreneurial business. You've got to represent those ideas of yours in a graphical format. Your graphic designer can help you accomplish that. You'll need to be able to answer these questions for him or her:
* What is your company all about, mainly?
* What kind of an experience will your company provide for its clientele?
* What kind of look do you envision and will it appeal to your target market?
* What makes your business distinct and easily recognized?
Your logo should represent what your company stands for and what function it performs. The best logos are sophisticated and simple, and they are challenging to design. Your logo should have a strong, balanced image with no extras to clutter its look. Bold logos are easier to see than those with thin delicate lines.
From an entrepreneur's perspective, a well-executed branding process will bring you recognition, reputation building and ultimately sales from your client base. When your branding is well crafted, the decision to buy on the part of your customer is easy to make. Branding can make you knowable and likeable and this is the kind of business for which folks like to whip out those credit cards.
Working With a Graphic Designer
You will want to interview several designers until you find one who can visually wrap themselves around and immerse themselves into your ideas, your business, and your projects. Your designer has to think like you, and then think your ideas out into picture representations.
They have to have an open mind, an ability to listen to the meaning behind your words, and the talent to craft a brand so big and so strong that it appeals to first you, and then through you, to your clients. Examine their website and their own handouts very closely. Does it represent the feeling you want to achieve? Is their portfolio impressive? Do they seem to have used branding principles for their own business? Then, they'll more than likely do a good job for you, too.
